Sometimes I don't know why I bother to keep going back over there. Well, I kind of know why. Most of the shows I love aren't shows my friends watch, so I (at least used to) go over there to read some good discussions. Problem is, the characters I like are usually the ones that end up being hated. Sometimes, there'll be one or two people who agree with me, but eventually, all the hate (sometimes irrational) gets old. Anyway, I enjoy some good, deep discussion (I guess I miss all those history and literature classes in college) but they take some stuff WAY too seriously. Like Glee. I just recently started watching (I got a review copy of the DVD set and have been catching up) and enjoyed it. I went to TWoP and -- whoa. I wondered if we were all watching the same show. Besides, the level of love for some characters and hate for others (usually the ones I actually enjoyed or found most interesting) boggled my mind. Or Chuck. It's not Shakespeare. It's supposed to be a fun show. I enjoyed last night's episodes. I peek into TWoP and there's all this hate. I respect others' opinions. I don't really care if someone hates a character I like. That's fine. But at least hate the character for legitimate reasons. Not invented ones. Or "just because." I don't know if the site was always like this -- I've been around since the Mighty Big TV days -- but now, I pretty much just check in for shows' spoiler threads and media links, because those can actually be helpful. I'm pretty much in the same boat. I don't know why I keep going back there, but I do, for the same reasons you mention (my friends don't watch the same shows, etc.). I've found another site or two for some of my shows, but I often run into sites that only care about the 'ships, or they just chitchat with each other and don't talk about the show (and I want to talk about the show, dammit!). I think the primary thing that has changed is everyone there is so damn humorless now. I can't read the 30 Rock threads anymore, because it's just too many people who nitpick what is, basically, an absurd comedy, and the nits they are picking are supposed to be absurd and aren't supposed to make sense or are supposed to be gross or inappropriate. Everything everyone says is dead serious. Their love for certain characters will not be challenged. Their hatred for other characters is eternal and taken way too seriously. No one seems to love to hate characters in a fun way the way everyone hated Dawson. And in many cases, it's all about the 'ship. With some shows, I really don't care about who is dating whom, I just want to talk about the show. But on a different note, I think I'm one of the few people on the planet who didn't have a problem with Miss Alli. Maybe because I wasn't on the TAR boards all that much, but I never saw a post from her that struck me as too much or out of line. I've seen far more overreactions and ridiculous, pointless smackdowns from this newer crew of mods.

A couple pages ago the Jersey Shore thread turned into a law debate based on what if the Situation had had sex with the girl who later passed out drunk in the street. Her friends and the housemates were too busy brawling for things to get anywhere, so this was a purely hypothetical discussion. Unlike the question of why do laywers and law students have so much free time in the middle of the work day to debate a hypothetical situation on Jersey Shore? OMG this! If I had to read the word consent one more time I was going to throw myself into an oncoming truck. It really is sad how completely humorless the posters and the recappers have become. Erin's Alias recaps were hilarious! I still sometimes reread them and giggle about The Beard and Exposition Fairy. Oh, and if you want blind, unadulterated hate, check out the Everyday Italian thread. They make GWOP look like a Kate frickin' fan club.

Pomegranate, the humorlessness of the recaps is one of the many reasons I don't bother reading recaps there anymore -- and I have been going to the site since the MBTV days, too. I was never a regular reader, but there were a few shows that I'd usually read the recaps of every few weeks. They were funny and more than simple recaps. The recaps now -- of the few that I've read -- are just plain boring. The fact that they don't come out until right before the next episode airs makes them even less interesting.
I read a few pages of the forums for an occasional episode, when it's a particularly good one, but then soon regret it when the posters seem to have a completely different view on things or seem to forget that it's a freakin' tv show and it's fiction!

Yeah, that's the other thing - most of the original crew have moved on, and the new recappers are not. Funny. I still read recaps by Potes (Biggest Loser, America's Next Top Model) because she's funny. M. Giant is funny with the TAR recaps, but that's about it. It's either Jacob writing another thesis or someone who just gives a basic rundown of what happened. If I wanted that, I could read TVGuide or something similar. It's like the focus on what made TWoP fun is mostly lost.

Kim, if it is the same one who used to do Real World way back when, always has done great recaps. Cindy Whateverherlastname's Lost recaps were good as well.
I have been going there since MBTV as well. The whole site has gone downhill.
It is so funny how much everyone used to bitch about Sars, Glark, and WingChun, but they really did hold that shit together and they had standards. These days it is all a bunch of crap for the most part.
Speaking of, I went there today to see what happened on AI since I missed it last night and I have to ask, who the hell is Jacob blowing that he has to do so many recaps? His "weecap", which is supposed to be truncated version of a full recap, was 16 f'ing pages long for Tuesday's AI. WTF.

Ah yes, Jacob. I sometimes try to read his Gossip Girl recaps, because that seems like that would be a fun show to write a snarky summary of, right? Apparently not. Yeah, his recaps are epic. And about nothing. I find myself skipping entire pages skimming for content that actually pertains to the show. Also, a lot of his recapping of GG reads like bad fanfiction. He will write about the show poetically, like these people are experiencing something profound and deep. Dude, this is Gossip Girl. It's a mess of a show. Also, why is he always giving the show an A+? Even the people in the threads don't think the show is A+. The commenters have a way better grip on reality than that guy does when it comes to the show.

Wow, really? I was unaware of his stance. How pretentious. It's called arts criticism Jacob, and it used to be a big part of Television without Pity.
The next time he decides to ramble on about the hushed moments of shared solitude and whispered insecurities between Blair and Serena during some scene where they are actually just talking about banging politicians, I'll try to remember that his recaps aren't over-the-top, nor is the show itself. It's ART.

God Jacob's recaps of Doctor Who are so fucking pretentious. Dude, it's a show. Chill.
