I always thought that Lily looked like John's sister Ellen - so doubly icky to be in a love story movie.

Marilu Henner seems like the type of no-fun mom who makes you get a full time job in high school, move out the morning of your 18th birthday, pinching pennies constantly and preaching about it all, blows it on con-artists, and then as an old woman expects you provide full time care.
John Travolta seems like a sad, gay old ape.

I just went through the recap of "Moment by Moment" I linked to earlier, and it mentions that movie was directed and written by Lily Tomlin's partner. Whom she started dating in 1971. The movie was released in 1978.
Yeah. That "dating Travolta" thing was totally real.

I actually saw that movie in the theatre with my parents! It was after Grease and I was allowed to pick the movie and I picked that one because I thought it would be like Grease. Um, no.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I do wonder if the Lily Tomlin "relationship" was more for her benefit. Back then, there were not a lot of rumors swirling about John, and it would have helped her more to be seen with him than him to be seen with her.

I'm sure the relationship was mutually beneficial. It was a time when it really wasn't cool for a celeb to be out of the closet.
Apparently there were some rumors about Travolta back then, they just weren't very loud. Some speculated that he took the "romantic lead" role in that terrible movie to make sure they stayed quiet.

I've always wondered if part of the reason his career took a nosedive was because of fears of those rumors gaining traction.

What do clams do to gay people to put so much fear into them? It must be awful.
