My mom's 78 and has been pro-gay as long as I have known her... or at least I never heard her say anything negative about gay folks and since it's become more of an issue, she's been outspoken in her support of gay marriage. She was raised Southern Baptist... which.... I guess not all Southern Baptist churches are the same, but they spawned those Westboro turdbuckets the Phelps Clan, and also the main Southern Baptist website lovingly refers to MY church (Unitarian Universilist) as a cult. But if mom heard any anti-gay messages in her youth she either didn't embrace them or else changed her mind sometime in her life. The church I was raised in was a United Church of Christ in Richmond, Va- and lots of gay folks attended. They were all in my parents age group and most were coupled up so they often all hung out as couples. I never heard her say a bad word about any of them (my dad sometime would talk in a falsetto voice and make limp wristed gestures behind their backs... but my dad was an asshole in all aspects of life) But anyway, my point is my mom is in Cissy's generation, and very possibly would have been getting negative messages early in her life- but either chose not to be hateful- or else changed her mind about teh gays after befriending several of them. You can't tell me Cissy never came upon any gay folks in the industry she was pushing her daughter into. It's a choice she made to stick to her close minded guns and if the rumors about Whitney are true then it's extra sad that she wouldn't have been able to accept her daughter in a relationship with another woman. Now how could she accept her in a relationship with Bobby Brown?!?!? I mean.... that relationship involved lots of cheating, drugs and.... *gulp* Doo-Doo Bubbles *shudder*

But there's no excuse for *choosing* not to grow. I've known a LOT of old people who have changed with the times, and I don't think it's rare or extraordinary. Racists and homophobes of all ages cling to that excuse - it's what I was taught, it's how I was raised, it's where I came from - as if they *have* to continue believing everything they were taught when they were 10.

My mom has often said that Whitney would have been better off gay because then she wouldn't have married Bobby Brown.

I am often amused at the amount of Hollywood stars who go on tv talking about their support of gay rights and marriage, although I know that many of them may not feel that way and feel differently in their private lives. And, many of them would not want their children to be gay. Many people (including celebrities) say what they think will win them kudos. Cissy said what she felt and seemed to make no excuse for it. Oprah seemed to want her to say something different, which shows bad interviewing skills on Oprah's part. Oprah interviews people from all walks of life. Does she actually think that everyone supports gay relationships? She must know that there are tons of people who hate black people in this world. So, why would it be shocking if there were people who disagree with gay relationships? I got the feeling Oprah had a good idea what Cissy would say, I think she was just registering disapproval and giving her an opportunity to walk it back. I completely agree with your first point though. A lot of these singers/ divas know good and well that they better pay public lip service to loving the gay community because that's where the money is. Homophobic or not. Cissy was another one who acted like she looooved her gays, at least according to Whitney's interview in Out years ago. Either she was faking it or probably more likely she was one of those types who looooves the gays and is down... until one of their kids says they are. The latter would be my guess. That's the case with many "open minded" "pro-gay" people; it's a lot easier when it's someone else's kid.

It's also possible that she had different views in the past and has become more conservative and/or religious as she has gotten older. I've seen that happen in my family. I have older relatives who were way out on fringes, anti-establishment, and embracing of progressive ideas in the 70s but by the 90s, they were ultra-conservative Christians. Sometimes the most hardcore ideologues are those who have made changes in thinking from one extreme to another.

light post, thanks for that link. I had no idea she used to have a gay following and sang in the clubs. I'm not too familiar with Cissy's work, I thought she was just a gospel singer. That is interesting. In the Oprah interview, she played clips of Cissy singing with Whitney back in the day, and ol' girl could definitely saaang. Yes it is unfortunate that so many of these "divas" with a gay following are happy to take our pink dollars, but despise us behind the scenes.

Just watching the Oprah interview. I thought I was very raw and honest.

This is a bit of a Whitney round-up. Lifetime, the premiere place for cheapy biopics, is working on a Whitney Houston bio. Former "America's Next Top Model" contestant YaYa DeCosta will play Whitney. Some publicity shots were released this week. Bobbi Kristina,Whitney's daughter, had voiced a desire to play Whitney. In a recent interview,Angela Bassett, who is directing the movie, said she had never considered Bobbi. Bobbi responded with a scathing twitter rant in which she called her a "bitch", a "bassketcase", and a biological male. Bobbi Kristina later apologized, saying she's just young and makes mistakes.

Yeah. Bobby Kristina is still a mess.
She recently had a super bizarre moment on Instagram where she posted a pic of herself ripping a bong hit, then went on to give an explanation -- given at a 4th grade writing level -- that she no longer does drugs or feels pain, but sometimes she does feel pain, and she needs Jesus to help her not listen to demons. Then she took to Twitter and said that someone is trying to tarnish her name. Even though it's her Instagram account and it's obviously a pic of her and it's her usual writing style. I don't even know what to say. She's just really sad.

This movie is going to cover the Bobby/Whitney years. Even if Bobbi Kristina looked exactly like her mother and was an amazing actress, it would be kind of weird for her to be acting out romantic scenes with some guy playing her dad. Lifetime is getting Deborah Cox to do soundalike recordings because they don't have authorization to use Whitney's real singing voice.
