I came to the realization that I can't stand Juliette Binoche. She is, for the most part, a craptastic actress, especially in English. I saw a brief clip of the movie Damage and I remembered how utterly awful she was in that. But for years, I have been accepting that she's actually a good actress because of all of the over-the-top gushing Hollywood did about her. A lot of that was driven in the 90s by the Miramax/Harvey Weinstein hype machine that made her a commodity. Her performance in Wuthering Heights was an absolute abomination. Normally I like Ralph Fiennes, but that was his worst performance ever too. I'm so glad I haven't heard from her in years. Did Hollywood really gush about her though? Was she ever a hit commodity? I looked at her filmography and it’s obvious she gets steady work but she was hardly a Miramax staple…..

She was huge around the time Chocolat was released, which was 2000. That was Miramax. I do find that film to be overrated and very reliant on stereotypes in its depiction of "Christianity bad!", but it did get nominated for a lot of awards.
American audiences also love to pedestalize all French actresses, even ones who aren't very good. Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche, Audrey Tautou, and now that girl on Emily in Paris is really popular with Gen Z, these are all actresses that got the OMGFrench treatment. Americans love to buy into the whole depiction of French women as ethereal goddesses of talent, sophistication, and beauty.

The Binoche hype hit peak annoyingness with the Miramax Chocolat Oscar campaign, but it started with Miramax English Patient Oscar campaign. I think everyone who worked on that movie was required to call her "La Binoche" like that's cute. Kristin Scott Thomas gave a much better performance in that movie and nobody gushed about her like she was a unicorn.
Gerard Depardieu once came out and said how much Binoche sucks. Although it appears since then, he made a movie with her.

Yeah, I thought Fiennes and Scott Thomas were great in "The English Patient". Defoe was engaging, as were Andrews and Colin Firth in a bit part that. Binoche was okay as audience stand-in IMO, but I never understood the Oscar for that one...
I've recently watched a middling romcom with Clive Owen and her and he was acting circles around her IMO. Owen can be a bit hit-and-miss, but I was taken aback how he was outpacing her. So it's not like I hate her, but it made me think to perhaps avoid movies with her going forward.
That said, I think someone like Cotilliard is also uneven. I've seen her be very good in some stuff and really unconvincing in other things, yet they get praised. "Rust and Bone", I thought she was bad in that. Did not understand the awards acclaim there at all.

Binoche in TEP bored me. I don’t know why people gushed over performance. Fiennes and KST made that movie.

I used to love Julie Delpy in the 90s just for being so beautiful. Now, I really love the movies she wrote & directed: 2 Days in Paris and 2 Days in New York. I also like the Before trilogy, which she co-wrote - they aren't perfect, but they do stick with you. Delpy is a lot like her character in those movies - really, really direct and passionate about things and uncontrollable, so she never was any good at navigating around Hollywood successfully as an actress. But I really respect everything she's accomplished because she earned it all the hard way. Fun fact: Julie made a terrible movie with Sam Shepherd in 1990. As an aspiring writer, she showed him some things she'd written and asked for his advice. His advice was: "Stay pretty. Don't write."

Can I just put in my vote for Whoopi Goldberg? I mean, her stupidity is astonishing, especially with her recent Holocaust comments. I know being an EGOT is no protection against being an idiot.
