Yes America is conservative, but as many people have pointed out (Frank Rich of the NY Times comes to mind), America loves its sex, too. Rupert Everett and Nathan Lane do not disprove my thesis, as neither of them bring the sexy. I still think that especially with younger actors and younger audiences, coming out won't create the heebie-jeebies and ruin careers anymore. Time will tell. ETA back in the day, Rupert was hot, but have you seen him lately? Go to www.gettyimages.com and do a search (they seem to be refusing direct links now). He looks every year of his age.

You don't think Rupert Everett is hot as hell? I do. I definitely think that if he were straight, he'd be HUGE. And yeah, he's no youngster but neither are Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, etc.

What would happen to Clooney's career if he came out as gay? His entire career is based on his suave, masculine charm. He's hot. Not a great actor, but sexy, gorgeous, and appealing. I think it would destroy his leading man ability. Not solely because of public reaction, but because the media would have no idea how to market him to the mainstream anymore.
Unfortunately, this is correct. In my hypothetical Clooney-comes-out-scenario, his charm and sex appeal would suddenly be mitigated by prejudice, discrimination, and probably shock/bewilderment about his sexuality.
Longer in the tooth actors are still more secure than young up and comers though. I think coming out as a gay would completely destory the mainstream careers of Orlando Bloom or Jessica Alba.

When Richard Chamberlain (yeah, I know) finally admitted that he was gay, I assumed that it wasn't a big deal. Firstly, he came out loooong after his young heartthrob days were over, and secondly, everyone (except a friend of mine who was seriously surprised) knew he was gay. But he said that his agent's phone stopped ringing for a year.
I think there's a huge difference between 'open secret' and 'out of the closet'. As long as Jodie Foster keeps her mouth shut about being gay, she can still be marketed as a straight love interest.
It bugs me too. I think that if they're good enough at their job, they should be able to convince you it's true.

Yeah, but even if Hollywood Hottie X isn't really a police man, women can fantasize about Hollywood Hottie X swooping in and saving the day, complete with Perfect Hollywood Kiss. When Hollywood Hottie X wouldn't want to do that last thing in real life, it's a bug in the works. It's similar to the reason young celebrities are told not to reveal significant others (even heterosexual ones) to the public. The illusion of accessibility or availibility is pretty powerful.

I was very suprised when Ellen and Portia de Rossi became a couple (I had no idea Portia was a lesbian), but I think they make a cute couple and seem really happy in pictures together.

TPTB in Hollywood insult me. I will not stop watching the movies of Hollywood Hottie X makes because of their real life homosexuality.

I agree and I recommend that people read The Celluloid Closet to see how much worse it used to be. It's sad that a lot of gay people in the movie industry were involved in making really homophobic movies just because they were terrified of being outed.
I agree with that too and I think it's made worse by the whole cult of celebrity situation at the moment. I find it so refreshing when actors refuse to talk about their private life because it's totally irrelevant to their work but, of course, that's not going to get you much publicity so only established actors are really able to do it.

I dunno, I know next to nothing about Christian Bale, for example. He's kind of B/C list, but moving up with Batman.
