I work around the studio and girls started lining up for (probably the standby?) tickets on WEDNESDAY NIGHT. Full tents and everything. I might watch this episode just for One Direction...

And Sam Smith's Somber Christmas had potential to be an amusing sketch, too. I'm normally pretty neutral on Kristen Wiig but I really don't think she added much. She's worn out her welcome with me. I find her intensely annoying.

I don't know why she was on the show so long. I'm trying to think if I liked any of her sketches or characters, but the only one I can think of affirmatively is as half of the Two A-holes, and Jason Sudeikis was better than she was. I think her impressions were way better than her original characters, or the ones created for her, but yeah. Compared to either Rachel Dratch or Kate McKinnon, she's white noise at best.

We loved the A-Holes, but we lunged for the remote when any of her other recurring characters showed up. ETA: Kate McKinnon is a genius -- definitely the best thing to happen to that show in a long time (although I do like Taran Killam, too).

The raccoons sketch also has me crying. It was like the Sweeney Sisters came back for one insane moment. Ah man, I floved the raccoon sketch! I've watched it, like, five times. It is perfection! I also fear that it is just weird enough to not make it to any retrospectives. I would buy an album of Raccoon Christmas songs. That 40's jingy jangly harmonizing is exactly what a raccoon lounge singer sisters would sound like.

Kristen Wiig always feels like she's trying to be a cooler version of Molly Shannon. Which is impossible.
I also remember Taran Killam on MadTV in 2001 and seeing him 15 years later as possibly the new Will Ferrell/Bill Hader MVP of SNL is a trip.

And Sam Smith's Somber Christmas had potential to be an amusing sketch, too. I would've liked to have seen a full Sam Smith sketch, too. SNL could have done a lot with his hangdog "nobody loves meeeeeeeeee" persona.

I maintain that Lorne Michaels is desperately in love with Kristen Wiig. That's the only explanation for how prominently she was featured on SNL, the huge lovefest she got during her sendoff (which no other former cast member received), and her frequent guest appearances.
I like Kristen as an actress (I just saw The Skeleton Twins and loved it), but I totally agree that her SNL original characters got old real fast. At least we were never subjected to a Gilly movie.

Yeah, can't stand Gilly, but I kind of like the Target Lady.

I looooved Penelope because I know these exact people in real life and being able to laugh at them through this character makes it more bearable to deal with them. I haaaated all of her other characters. No gray area, for some reason.
