I can't believe they got Brian Blessed. He's an actor of some stature. Is he down on his luck? Or just another racist asshole? I never disliked Sean Astin the way a lot of people seemed to , so I was disappointed to see he was involved. I had never heard of Henty and according to highondegrassi's link the original books were published in the 1800s. I wonder if the audiobook version removes the overtly racist elements? Over the past few years, it seems like the idea that blacks liked being enslaved has really taken off among Christian/Antebellum South apologists. A few years ago, the "Duck Dynasty" guy said so in that controversial GQ interview, but it was overshadowed by his comments towards gays.

So I wonder if Kirkles could use slavery as being "good" or "useful" in his next production related to the Jewish community enslaved under Pharaoh? Would Moses be considered the "Mrs. Beecher Stowe" of his time?
I don't even know what it is that Kirkles and his ilk are drinking, but damn they should be castoff to their own island and never be heard from again. Just awful the vile ideas that go through his head and puts to paper/video.

Can he get hit by a car already?

Sean seemed to make a point of saying it was historical fiction - so at least he wasn't taking it as truth. Granted it would have been better to have completely stayed away from that bs. - But maybe he just really needed the work. :/

The one good thing I used to be able to say about Kirkles is that he adopted four kids and I believe at least one of them is black, so I didn't think I'd have to add "racist" to the list...

This is an article from spring 2014. I think his name recognition is opening a lot of doors in the Christian entertainment business, and he is happily walking through them.

And that's exactly why people dislike him, right? Because he's an opportunist.

Do people dislike him? If his rep is that he's an opportunist, then for all anyone knows, he may have declared himself a Christian in order to get more acting roles. But he sounded pretty reasonable and lukewarm on the topic of Christianity in this interview. His views at that time would not be Kirk Cameron approved. Maybe he's become more indoctrinated over time, or maybe he's stringing Kirk and his posse along to get more jobs out of them. I never thought I'd be curious about the hidden thoughts and motives of Sean Astin. Thanks internet.

IIRC, it seemed people LOVED Sean Astin when Lord of the Rings came out, but then he used that good will to make an acceptance speech at the SAG Awards that was clearly a campaign speech for SAG President and he came off really phony and suddenly nobody liked him.

Unfortunately, go to the South and many of these views are not unheard of. Chelsea Handler is not usually my cup of tea, but I watched the episode of her Netflix series on racism, and she talked to some folks in a small town in either Mississippi or Alabama (can't remember which) who basically said the exact same things - most slave owners were good and the abusive ones were the exception not the rule ("why would you treat something you paid $600 for so badly?" reasoned one guy), slaves were happy and taken care of - that's why after emancipation so many of them stayed! (Chelsea countered that with "Have you heard of something called Stockholm Syndrome?"). Oh, and the Civil War was about states' rights, not slavery. (Except it totally was).
And these people probably didn't even share Kirkles' particular brand of Christianity. Though Kirkles sounds just like the Confederates (the Cornerstone Speech given by the veep of the Confederacy straight-up said that white people owning black people was the natural order of things/what God intended, and the Confederacy was the First Nation smart enough to figure that out). And I suppose there is a market consisting of people who want to believe God endorses their racism, and Kirkles wants to tap into that to make some coin.
