I don't know. I also suspect that he will be remembered, which is one criteria I think of when considering someone a movie star. Like Brad Pitt, for example. Some of his movies are really bad, some are good, and there are a lot of them. He had a heartthrob phase (so did Clooney). He's not great at acting, but he can do his thing proficiently. When asked to name stars from the era, our teenage grand kids will probably know who these two guys are, partly because they have been ubiquitous onscreen and in the media for so many decades. I am in total agreement with your assessment of Clooney's stardom. Awhile back, it may have been on the old Fametracker site, there was a similar discussion about Brad Pitt. His box office returns were being compared to Brendan Fraser's. Now, of course, that seems to be a crazy comparison but when Pitt's movies weren't huge moneymakers while Fraser's were, the argument had validity in some people's eyes. There are definitely cases where the media attempts to create stardom that is bigger than the person warrants (*cough*Gwyneth Paltrow*cough*), but there are cases were stardom can't be absolutely measured by box office returns. I don't buy into Goopy's, "once your on the A-list, you stay forever on the A-list" nonsense, but I do think Clooney is one those people who will always be A-list. The fact that he doesn't generally seek to make huge blockbuster movies is, to me, a testament to his stardom. He doesn't really need those huge returns in the same way that some other people do. There's no doubt that sexism plays a part in this and Pitt and Clooney have more leeway than Sandra Bullock, for instance, who does need to consistently deliver, but though he may be obnoxious and calculating, I don't think his stardom is in question.

I have been known to belt out "Man of Constant Sorrow," much to the confusion of my friends.
I think he has an A-list presence. Can't really explain it. I think he was at his "Clooney-est" in Ocean's 11, which remains a favorite (the soundtrack is killer!).

George and Amal in Kentucky Having people speak directly to the camera about how great you are, buying pies at the local bakery, singing happy birthday to a fellow customer at a restaurant, drinking beer, and making sure to get lots of pics with the ordinary folk. It's like a cheesy political ad. The best part was the pretend-leaked cellphone video of George playing hoops cause he wouldn't bring a camera crew along or anything to a private visit to his hometown. I won't believe Amal played basketball with the guys until I see it. What did that outfit look like exactly? Was she wearing fashion-daring high-heel sneakers?

A friend of mine is from Kentucky, and George has been going back for years and catching up with people/seeing the old haunts. It's just that, now, everyone has cameras and feels the need to document and share it. He did all this same stuff during and after ER, it's just it didn't make the entertainment news.

Looks like a fun time to me & while George is a decent actor he really couldn't fake that genuine enthusiasm for Kentucky!

Supposedly the Clooneys are going to try and have a baby, whatever, I just saw this shot of the couple and had to share. She always cracks me up with her "LOOK AT ME." face.

I don't know why, but since he got married, he seems to be aging rapidly. He looks too orange, and older than before. Amal is reaching intervention time levels of thin. You can see her vertebrae. I know I'm just a gauche yokel from flyover country, but girl needs bagel...and some burgers in her life.
