ET probably thought the case was about a serious fashion crime. Like wearing white shoes after Labor Day, or even more serious?

I can't bring myself to open the articles about George's pronouncement about the White Oscars. His quote is "We need to get better at this." There's nothing more smug than when George uses "we". He used it in his Oscar acceptance speech and I wanted to slap his smug face silly.
He sounds like he thinks he's the CEO of a company and he's issuing a statement about something his employees did wrong.

Here's what George had to say: LINKAll of the sudden you're moving in the wrong direction compared to 10 years ago? Back in 2004 we remembered to nominate a few black people, but we forgot this time and now it's easier to see the racism. Oops! What he's basically talking about is tokenism, which is an insidious form of unintentional racism that helps Hollywood liberals like George Clooney to sleep at night and assume their work is done. When you look at Clooney's producer credits, his movies are pretty lacking in diversity, so maybe he needs to stop thinking in terms of "we" and focus on what he can do as a powerful and popular Hollywood producer. You used to be better at it? When?! And in what universe?!

When I picture "members of the Academy" I picture the guys Kate Winslet hung out with in The Holiday or Alan Arkin in Argo. George is getting close to that curmudgeon age. I would like to see his nomination ballot. Bet Straight Outta Compton and Will Smith weren't on it!

They had a piece by Kevin Frazier of Entertainment Tonight about this on CBS This Morning today, and at the end of it, Frazier pointed out that of the last however many movies Clooney's produced, none had big roles for black actors, which I thought was an impressive highlighting of hypocrisy. considering he's on ET. Granted, a lot of the movies Clooney's directed have been period pieces in which it would have been inaccurate to have African Americans in certain roles, but maybe he should broaden the types of films he chooses and become part of the solution.

I watched Henry V on the BBC and they had a black actor playing the Duke of York with no explanations or apologies and it was fine. Even if you want to maintain historical accuracy and not, for example, have Don Cheadle play Edward R. Murrow, I think there are a lot of opportunities to cast non-white actors in roles where strict historical accuracy isn't so important. And Clooney has made movies that weren't historical that he could have cast black actors in...

I appreciate Clooney's message. I think his heart was in the right place. But we all need to make sure our words are backed up with action. Also it is important to remember this isn't a "black" issue it is a "diversity" issue. There are many marginalized races, religions, genders and etc. who deserve more representation in Hollywood. Making this issue just "a black thing" does it a disservice.
