It seems like the powers that be in Hollywood have given him a second chance where if others behaved similarly they would have been written off. He was really heading to B list land when he filmed Man About Town with Rebecca Romijn and Surviving Christmas with Christina Applegate, but somehow he turned it around and is now in Fincher films like Gone Girl. I think it was a smart move to take the bull by the horn and step back behind the camera more and direct some pretty good quality films (Gone Baby Gone, The Town, et al.) I feel like others who went this route would probably just stay behind the camera, but Affleck has been given some pretty coveted acting roles.

I know it was typecasting, but he was pretty good in Gone Girl. I do find it ironic that that movie is on cable just as they're divorcing. I'm only basing this on the movie, but Ben Affleck the person seems way worse than Nick Dunne the character.

I know this is a bit paranoid on my part, but since the news broke, I've been feeling that something huge must have happened behind the scenes to push her them to the breaking point. Considering all JGar was willing to tolerate (read: enable) before now, I think it must have been pretty significant. This, to me, (a scandal that hasn't quite exploded yet) explains why they would still be pushing the "playing nice for the kids" PR crap even after admitting to a split.
Maybe he graduated from alcohol/pills to something...less acceptable (ie; Duchovny going to rehab for "internet pornography addiction" when it was really (allegedly) heroin)? A mistress who produced a hidden child? Finally got caught on camera with an actual boyfriend?
Maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part. I don't hate their acting skills, which have alternately bored/entertained me, but the loathesome nature of their celebrity personas totally soured me on these two (and him in particular.)

Welllll, and this sounds insane, there is someone on Lipstick Alley who swears and be damned that Ben is the father of Bristol Palin's baby. Something about how Ben and Mama Sarah are on pretty good terms, Ben and Bristol got to know each other very well, and that is who Ben met up with during the Canada trip. This either sounds way far-fetched or just so absurd as to end up being true. If there were not Jen and the kids to take into account, I would be shouting, "Yaaasss!!" all the way down the street. That would be quite the scandal.

He wasn't bad but when I read the book I totally pictured a Ryan Philippe-esque actor playing Nick because you were supposed to believe that he could have done it (IMHO of course). But with movieNick it was always clear that he was innocent. Obviously, script and direction are to blame too here, but Ben just isn't an actor with enough nuance to pull off an ambigious character like that. I also wish he'd stop casting himself in his own films; I really liked Gone Baby, Gone because his brother was so good in it. I would have liked The Town better if Ben hadn't sleepwalked through his entire perfomance in that one.

Ryan Philippe would have been great casting.

He could kiss all respectability and his political aspirations away. Is he really trying to nurse serious political aspirations?

He was basically caught red handed with another woman in Nova Scotia, wasn't he? Maybe that was the last straw and JG just wanted to make it to the 10th anniversary publicly.
ETA: People mag has pap photos of them together in the Bahamas and man, do they look uncomfortable.

Boy, you're not kidding. I was wondering this weekend if there were going to be any pics of them on this vacation.
