So I just started Season 4 and I wanted to know is Angel worth investing the time? Angel is also available on Netflix Instant Watch so I watched the first episode only because I wanted to find out what happened to Cordy (the Season 4 1st Buffy ep did not mention her at all.) I can take or leave the character of Angel-the brooding thing does not appeal to me-but I do miss Cordelia's comedic shallowness. So far in Season 4, I don't miss Angel at all, but something seems missing without Cordy. I think you'll like Angel - at least the first few seasons. Angel is much less broody and there's a lot of Cordelia. Stuff changes, but if you get that far you'll probably like the show on it's own.

I loved Angel until the episode where Doyle died then I refused to watch it again, in a sulk. I love watching the first season of Buffy just to see how young and un-gym-honed they all look!! Smidge looks so sweet, like Sarah Connor in the first Terminator

Angel is hands down my favorite of the two shows. I know that's unpopular.
And for me it has held up better over the years then Buffy has. It's a shame it never gets the credit it deserves for being an amazing show in it's own right. Especially since it moved so far away from Buffy.
It's weird how characters like Willow, Faith, Darla, Drusilla, and Spike were Buffy characters. Yet, you could see the deeper potential in them once they were on ATS.
All the Faith crossovers are the perfect xample. It's almost like watching two different characters. You had Who Are You and This Years Girl from BTVS. And 5x5 and Sanctuary from ATS. These episodes demonstrate precisely why I vastly preferred ATS to Buffy.
So for me, Angel is like alot of shows and starts out kind of slow. But there was alot of brilliance in season 1 too. But once it gets going nothing is better.
And Wolfram and Hart as the ultimate Big Bad is brilliant. Humans who knowingly and willingly made the choice between good and evil. And chose evil. Damn the consequences. Kick ass stuff.

So I'm re-watching Buffy and I have sort of a random comment. I hate Faith. And I've never seen Angel, but from my peripheral knowledge of the Buffyverse, apparently she gets a redemptive arc on Angel, and there was even talk of her own spin-off. This really annoys me, because Faith was a psychopathic murderer. And it wasn't like she had lost her soul like Angel or was under a spell (unless that's revealed on Angel). She murdered in cold blood. And it almost makes me not want to watch Angel because I don't want it to dull my hatred. Also, how do you put someone on to Buffy? I have friends who swear The Walking Dead is amazing, and I can't help but think if you think that's good, Buffy is a far better show with zombies (and vampires and demons...). But I can't imagine anyone I know watching Season 1 and getting past the B-movie cheese and wanting to stick with it. I stuck with it, thanks to this thread, and watched the whole thing a few years ago. But maybe someone could just start with Season 2? Or maybe the finale of S1?

I just started Batgirl watching it with me with season 1. She's still warming up to it but she's getting there.

I have a niece who started watching Buffy recently and I'm getting a lot of texts which just basically say "OMG." It's fun to see a newbie's reaction to things. Like, she didn't understand why I started laughing when she said "I just want Buffy and Angel to have sex already."
