I read an article within the last year where she talked about how they met, and it was kinda weird. She was all into him, and he showed up in flip flops, and then didn't contact her for 6 months while she was away filming. It just seemed like he didn't realize how awesome Keri Russell was. She said he said something like he was trying to make it look like he didn't care too much (I think re: the flip flops), but anyway, Keri Russell! eta: oh, well, this is it. Or at least part of it. Apparently it's from 2007, so I guess they were happy then. Still don't understand how he showed up to a date with Keri Russell in workout clothes. Article

My theory with celebrity divorces is that: 1) They're very rich, so staying unhappily married just to have a decent house and lifestyle is not a factor for them. 2) They tend to be attractive, so the insecurity of finding another mate is greatly lessened. If you know you're hot, chances are that you'll be able to find someone else relatively easily. 3) They tend to have inherent mercurial, flighty personality traits, and therefore tend to get bored more easily. To be fair, I think you also have to account for the fact that actors are frequently separated for long periods while filming and promoting. Distance takes a toll on any relationship. And when you're constantly around a bunch of other very attractive people, the temptation to stray is huge (not that Keri Russell strayed, but you get the point).

And they were married for almost seven years. No, it's not forever, but I wouldn't consider it a short-term marriage, either. Sitting here, I can think of five couples I know who married and then divorced in their late 20s through late 30s. Just normal old people. I do think Hollywood does have its share of quickie (under two years) marriages.

Separating after seven years has long been pretty common even among non-celebrity types, there was an article in my local paper about it a couple years ago. Basically the stress of caring for young children can magnify whatever problems were already there and makes things come to a head around the seven year mark. This is particularly true for people who marry in their 20s, after seven years if they're not happy they're still young enough to find someone/something better.

I may be showing my age here, but I was a huge Tony Lucca/Keri Russell fan during the MMC days! (see picture for 1993) They were the first couple I ever "shipped" and I didn't even realize it! LOL

I had no idea she was on the MMC! And yes, this might just be the Seven-Year Itch at play. The flip flops story is odd.

She sounds so nice and sane in that Self article.

I totally forgot she had a daughter! I only remembered River (her son).

Those kids are darling -- they had a pretty amazing gene pool to draw from, but they both favor their father, Shane Deary.
