Did anyone watch the Olympic Trials? I don't know when I started rooting for Nastia, but now I actually want her to do well, whereas a couple years ago, I really didn't like her.
Why do the women have to go through a camp to get the last 4 remaining spots on the team, but the men found who was on the team a few hours after their trials were over? How come they don't have a camp like the women?

I hated Nastia a few years ago, but I too find myself rooting for her. Most likely because I cannot stand Shawn Johnson - honestly I cannot stand any of the current crop of American female gymnasts or gymnastics for that matter. The sport has been going downhall since the demise of the Soviet Union.
Now the United States is poised to dominate because they adopted something akin to the old Soviet system, and most of the old Soviet coaches migrated. Unfortunately, these new groups of gymnasts don't have the artistry and WOW routines that made the old Soviets and even Romania so great.

You can blame Bruno Grandi and the new code for that. Since the Europeans started sucking, Grandi and his cronies kept trying to find ways to keep the Euro-trash on top but it hasn't worked at all--with all the Euro bias, they're still sucking against the Chinese and Americans. Did you all see Euro's this year? New definition to the word tragedy. This code has made everyone unartistic, even the ones who are naturally dispositioned to be. It's unfair for China and the U.S. to compete in 6-3-3 when they have so many great gymnasts but other countries can't find three competent gymnasts.
China is the most artistic team but I'll never root for them. Until we can use underage gymnasts on our Olympic teams, I'm not going to be happy for a team that does. What a coincidence that they just happened to find two gymnasts with 17.7 SV on bars during an Olympic year. Awesome.
With that said, I will probably change my mind if Jana Bieger makes it on to the US Olympic team. She's probably the most horrible gymnast since Kim Kelly.

I had kind of lost touch with gymnastics since the Sydney games, but I watched the trials the other night. I was really shocked by the floor routines. WTF? Why don't they just get rid of the music and make it like the men's floor exercise? All they do is tumbling passes anyway. The US gymnasts SUCK at dancing now.
I don't like Shawn Johnson, either. Her beam routine is impressive, but where is the artistry and grace? I miss the old Russian gymnasts, especially Lilia P. and Boguinskaya.

Victims of the code. No one has time to dance because they have to do 5 tumbling passes plus lots of stupid shit jumps. The FIG are ruled by a bunch of idiots who don't care what the actual gymnasts and coaches think. Lilia was from Ukraine and Boguinskaya was from Belarus.

It looks like gymnastics is headed for the same fate as figure skating. It will limp onwards with the miniscule fanbase, low ratings, with a federation more interested in their own egos, rather than what is good for the sport.

What's the deal with the FIG changing the code? bitterntwisted, how is it related to their egos? Is it a power thing, changing things just because they can? Why fix it if it ain't broke?
Sorry for all the questions, but Google isn't telling me anything.

This is not all true. For starters the three routine rule - hurts the Europeans because they are unable to throw out a bad scores - just see what happened to Russia last year at the World Championships. I'm sure they would have loved the old system where they could do six routines and throw out the low score.
Secondly, it is a pretty broad generalization to refer to all European gymnasts as Euro-Trash. Besides the new code was put in placed to try and get rid of judging irregularities (which usually benefitted that Euro trash you speak of) not as a why to unfairly punish either the Chinese or Americans.
It was designed to make gymnastics less subjective and easier to judge - much like the recent changes to the figure skating code. Unforutnately a code that was supposed to make the sport more artistic has back fired needless to say.

When I was little, I loved, loved watching gymnastics. I was born in 1975 for context. I remember, thanks in large part to "Wide World of Sports," watching gymnastics nearly all the time - nationals, worlds, even European competitions. I could rattle off the top gymnasts in almost every country. Now it seems I can hardly find it and I don't even know who most of these girls are. And also hate what floor exercise has become. At the trials, there was one cute little girl, Mattie something or other, who had some nice dance elements, I thought, but really that was it.

Mattie Larson. She was my favorite behind Nastia. She finished 7th in the AA, but I don't know if she got an invite to the selection camp.
