I didn't mean to imply that Katy's turning 30 meant that she was no longer sexy. I think mrspickles articulated my point in a much better way. And I didn't mean to imply that you meant to imply that:) I knew what you meant, I'm just saying that I think her schtick was 50's pinup, and I think that's a look that would still work for her, but she seems to be consciously trying to appear more serious, which she's just...not.

It's probably the first time I've ever been accused of articulating anything better, so THANKS! I will take that win!

So the new American Idol...?? What has happened to her? Why the extreme fall- like, I can't recall an as extreme fall from someone that just kinda crept up on me from out of nowhere... Why has her career tanked this bad? I think it was a combination of her hair and her support for Hillary Clinton during the election. For better or worse, how female celebs look is still a major factor of success for most of them. There are a couple of well-known examples of women whose careers floundered similarly following a drastic appearance change. The best examples I can think of off the top of my head are Kerri Russell right before the second season of Felicity started and Janet Jackson with The Velvet Rope album (one of my top 5 albums of all time). People responded really badly to the cut to the point that Katy acknowledged it and felt the need to explain it. TBH, I actually thought she looked cute with the hair and was a little surprised that she got so much flack for it. I think a pop star can withstand a questionable look, but I think it's harder to do when you are starting a new promotional cycle with a different sound than your fans are used to. I also think Katy's popularity (a lot like Taylor's) had a lot to do with seeming really white and being very appealing to a conservatve audience, which isn't that common among pop princesses. Over the last two decades, most of them that have reached megafame levels have some sort of urban flare- ethnic, gay, etc. Something that made them seem like they were filtered through the lower east side at some point. To me, Katy has always seemed like she was put together by and for fun-loving nurses* in a solidly red state.I know she's worked with hip-hop artists before, but I always feel like I'm watching something distinctly pop when i see her perform. Over the years, there have been so many articles wondering who her fans are, how she's so popular, who's buying her records. Even in this very thread.I think the answer was the same people you kind of don't hear about or think about too much until they vote for Trump. Of all of the pop girls, I think she and Taylor were probably most susceptible to conservative political backlash. *Not meant to disparage nurses at all. Just used as an example of people who might like to have fun, but still remain reasonable and level-headed.

If she is trying to appear more serious, then I am not sure why the song and video for "Swish Swish" happened. Don't crow about your "purposeful pop" and come out with that junk.

I'm taking my daughter to see her tomorrow, and we are both so excited! Her music is will always remind me of moments with my girl. And, I think she's way more fun and more entertaining than Taylor Swift. And I like that she went all out for HRC. I root for her.

The new single, Hey Hey Hey, is an improvement on the last 3 singles, and all about Girl Power! Fun video too. (Who is that as Lord Markus? Patton Oswalt?) Still nothing has come close to those songs on Teenage Dream. That CD stayed in my rotation for a full year of pop addictiveness.

Interview with Glamour. The cynical way to interpret this is that she's rationalizing her career failure with therapy-speak, but I think she's truly introspective and willing to grow as a person.

Her ability to realize that she should take care of her shit before having kids puts her well above many, many people I know (one of my parents included). I hope therapy is helpful to her, it always seems like she had a really restrictive childhood.

Interview with Glamour. The cynical way to interpret this is that she's rationalizing her career failure with therapy-speak, but I think she's truly introspective and willing to grow as a person. Yeah, for the most part I think she's shown a willingness to admit her faults in a way that seems mostly sincere. I still like that she went on Pod Save the People during her album release and was pretty open to discussing the critiques leveled at her in a way that wasn't just her doubling-down on her mistakes. Upthread there was discussion about why her career has stalled of late. And honestly, I think it's as simple as, her sound and persona was very youthful, and now that she's in her 30s, she knew she needed to branch out... and the end result in trying something new was that it just wasn't as catchy as what she previously produced. Like Gaga, her bread and butter will be pop earworms, and if she can record something that's addictive as some of her past hits but also balances the "pop star ages out of Lisa Frank couture" desire she has, I think she could easily resurrect her career.
