He is so ridiculously hot. I might actually go see Superman, just for the pretty.

Wow, that's a surprise. And he finally has gotten the lead in a big Hollywood production, after being a contender in the last audition rounds for several others, like Superman Returns and James Bond. He'll look smokin', no doubt about that!
OT: Do we really need yet another installment of Superman? I don't think I'll go see it on the big screen, despite the serious amount of Hotness that is Henry.

Micheal K noted, and I think it's head scratching as well, that All-American superheroes are being played by British people. Christian Bale is Batman, Andrew Garfield is Spiderman, and now Henry Cavill is Superman. Not to sound so jingoistic, but aren't they any American dudes that can play the part? Just saying. I think Senor Bale is great, but this trend is ...head scratching to say the very least.

The current crop of American actors look like children when compared to the men from Europe and Australia. Chris Pine, Jake G. and Chris Evans are the exceptions. Older guys like Affleck, Renner, Depp, RDJ are being pressed into service in these action roles because they are believable. Guys like Efron, JT, and their ilk are not.

Cavill is a great choice. He's a stunning male beauty with talent and real screen presence. Also, he does a very convincing American accent.
But it concerns me that there is a feeling amongst so many that American can no longer produce strong leading men for the big screen. I think there's plenty of American leading man material out there, but the studios are too obsessed with finding insta-stars instead of nurturing promising young talent.
So we end up with too many 21st century equivalents of Troy Donahue. A bunch of pretty boys who are limited in talent and destined to fade once their tweener fans outgrow them.
I think the Europeans (particularly the Brits) and the Antipodeans have a leg up on us because over there, it's harder to get famous BEFORE you actually get good. Most of their actors are classically trained and have paid their dues.
Over here, you can get cast as the lead in three big budget films before anyone cares if you can act.
Hollywood has always put talent-challenged people in lead roles. But it didn't used to be that way exclusively. Paul Newman was gorgeous, but he could also act and hold the screen.
What American actor can you say that about nowadays? Matt Bomer, maybe? He might have a future in indie films, but in mainstream features, I doubt it. The Hollywood PTB, many of whom are themselves gay, will not risk a tentpole franchise on an actor who is most certainly gay.

I actually have less of a problem with the Superman remake than I do with Spiderman, just because Superman hasn't recently been done WELL. I like Cavill and I hope the movie is good.

I'd buy Efron as Spiderman before Garfield. That dude is freaking weird looking. Why not do a casting call and get an unknown? These guys (Garfield and Cavill) aren't complete unknowns here, so why not cast an unknown American up and comer? I know in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter, and Brits and Aussies have played icons before: Wolverine and Scarlett O'Hare come to mind, but this trend still confuses me. Also, if I'm not mistaken, I think all the guys in the running to play Lincoln are foreign as well. Daniel Day Lewis and Liam Neesom were rumored for Spielberg's version. And some other foreign dude is playing the Vampire Hunter version.

I don't mind Brits being cast in big American superhero flicks, as long as they are good in the role. I do find the recent trend to be a little funny though.
I think Cavill is smoking hot, but from what I have seen, dude can't really act. Oh well. At least he's pretty.
Also, I think it's hard for studios to go with unknowns for big productions like this. There's a lot of money and promotions involved, so most likely they need to go with someone who is already bankable and used to charming the PR scene.

He's been cast as the new Superman. I think this is a very good choice. Me too. Considering the other choices were brawn and little acting talent. Actually, everything I've read indicates that the other two top choices were Joe Mangineleno (Alcide from True Blood) and Jon Hamm. The latter certainly doesn't lack for acting talent. And the former hasn't really been called on to do much besides be very hot, tall and werewolf-y on TB, so I can't say he's a terrible actor. And both are American and extremely masculine/butch, so I don't buy the "we have to import our action stars because our crop of actors are all prettyboy sissies" excuse. I guess the studio could argue that they're primarily TV stars but, in the states, so is Cavill. Henry's cute and all -- I didn't watch the Tudors beyond the first season, so I forget whether or not I think he can act. But after the Enquirer article about how AMC's costuming department had to force him to stop going commando because of his huge junk being too distracting, I really would have liked to see Hamm in the tights. I think they ultimately thought he was "too old" for the part. Which is too bad, because he would have been the best choice IMHO -- he embodies an old-school All-American sense of masculinity that seems perfect for Superman. And his 30 Rock/SNL stints have shown that he could bring out his inner goofball for Clark Kent's dorky side.
