I've never big a big fan. She always seemed too big and famous for me, although I appreciated her calling herself a feminist, but damn! I just watched the video and I have mad respect for her. She got balls. That was freaking awesome to see a woman of color dancing in a antebellum home and taking the role of lady of the house. I like the new, more political Beyonce. And hopefully this won't be just about her, but will make room for more women of color artists. Having the young boy in a hoodie dancing in from of police is heartbreaking. She did that at the Superbowl! You people on this site! As stated on the Bruno Mars thread, I have an almost two decade dislike of Beyonce, but your description of her song/video may make me, for the first time ever, (gulp) seek out a video of hers to watch, and it might make me like her a bit. I'm scared to do it. I swear the only thing I made out during her performance was "hot sauce", so I dismissed it as yet another stupid Beyonce song.

Meh. I might need to turn in my black folks card, but I don't love it. Video is stunning, but the song on its own just doesn't do a lot for me. That's partly because it's really difficult for me to make out what she saying half the time. I also think she's very impressed with herself, her sex life and her clothes. That's the recurrent theme I'm picking up on her songs from the last two or three years. But people go crazy and spend $400 on seats to her concert and the world will continue to spin. Yay. Lol

OK, I am a little confused. A couple of folks I know on FB are ranting about her anti-police song at the Super Bowl. I went to read the lyrics and I don't see that. She seems to be ranting against the negative talk about her and her family that is out there. I pulled up the video, and the lyrics read better than the actual song is sung. The clothes are awesome in the video. My safety conscious mind immediately imagined her getting that long hair pulled out when she was hanging out the car window, so I didn't like that. The use of the police in the video didn't come off as anti-police to me. Guess it's how one interprets things.

Speaking of her hair but does she wear a weave? If she does, how does it stay in place so well with all the high energy head movements she does.

I see Greecies were doing their best not to bump her thread. Trust me, I dug her up from page 8(?) Saturday afternoon, after the video dropped and the controversy over her once again taking someone's work without proper crediting was brewing. It was quickly quashed, the right people fell on their swords, the director/photographer was harassed, threatened, and retracted their claims, and Beyonce naturally stayed silent. It really is par for the course now. Team Beyonce is full of thieves. That's just how they roll over there. Beyonce is, as Beyonce does. It wasn't even worth posting. I think the song is awful, the video nothing special, and the politics frankly a bit too little, too late. I'd rather she use her actual voice to say something about the BLM movement, or police brutality, or anything. A few political overtones in a video that features her also shaking her ass, isn't enough for me. Yes, I am a hater, a bad feminist, judgmental, etc.

Meh. I might need to turn in my black folks card, but I don't love it. tanyak, don't say that on LSA. Members of the Beyhive would snatch your edges! I think the song is awful, the video nothing special, and the politics frankly a bit too little, too late. The song isn't much without the video, although I bet some dance troops would think it'd make a great song for a J-Setting routine. From the first listen I thought in the song she was mostly talking about herself (or a fictionalized version of herself). I don't think the political message comes too late. Beyoncé may feel she's at the point in her career where she feels secure enough to sneak in messages like these without worrying about alienating too much of her (potential) audience. She doesn't always have to be the good little, safe black female performer who plays nice in a post-racial (ha) society anymore. I give her props for that. More props if she came up with these ideas mostly by herself. Also, those people who are claiming that the song and the video are anti-police? Where? This isn't NWA who said "F--- the Police". This isn't Ice-T who did the song "Cop Killer".* I didn't see anyone trying to shoot at the cops (and if anyone thought that little boy had a gun on him somewhere when he held his hands up...well, that person just played right into the video's message.) *By the way, what kind of roles do Ice Cube and Ice-T take now? Yeah, thought so.

I felt my edges start to loosen when I was just lurking in the Beyonce threads last night. lol I guess the sinking of the police car and the "Stop Shooting Us" graffiti on the wall come off as anti-police. Who knows.

More props if she came up with these ideas mostly by herself. I guess I'm such a cynic that I just think this 'message' was actually marketing and not really Beyonce having a strong feeling about something. And my cynicism is not directed at Beyonce specifically, but I would probably feel like this about most entertainers, and their management. Something's trending in the media/culture? Better jump on it and appropriate it for our 'art'!

I cannot stand her but if white tears are flowing over this awesome video, I respect that. God forbid someone be proud to be black and be a little political. I totally agree with this. But the big problem is that the world only listens to wealthy black women (see Oprah). We don't just have a color problem, we have a class/money problem too.
