Man, only a few minutes into ABC News' tribute to him, and I'm already tearing up.
I agree with the person who said this is affecting them the same way Jerry Orbach's death did. I've been in remission from Hodgkin's disease for almost nine years, and it always gets me when people I admire are diagnosed with cancer.
When Jennings announced he had lung cancer I really felt for him and his family. Lung cancer is horrible. I was hoping that he'd be able to rebound from chemo well enough to anchor the news one last time, but I'm not surprised that he wasn't able.

Your post made me cry. Stay strong, you and your Mom.
I don't know why PJ's passing has made me so sad. But it truly is a sad day. Aaron Brown looked like he was going to lose it during Anderson's program. It's gonna be hard for him on his own broadcast tonight.

I work at an ABC affiliate and we got word about Peter about a half hour before they went live on the air with the announcement. We were all pretty stunned.
Charlie Gibson did the first report at about 11:40 EST and already had Ted Koppel, Diane Sawyer, and Barbara Walters with him to reminisce. So Charlie and Diane were pretty much up all night and all through GMA and then Charlie did WNT.
I had kind of wondered where Elizabeth Vargas was, as she and Charlie had been alternating weeks of hosting, but read today that her husband, Marc Cohn (the guy that sang "Walkin' In Memphis") had been shot in the head! Some guy tried to carjack him after a concert in Denver. Thankfully he's going to be just fine, but I can't imagine the stress on her!
As far as replacements go, I could see Charlie Gibson, Ted Koppel, or Elizabeth Vargas in the chair. I REALLY hope ABC doesn't bring in someone from the outside. Not unless they've got Peter's journalistic sense and no BS attitude.

Of the Big Three anchors Peter Jennings was my favorite. He was a calm and honest reporter who never sacrificed professionalism in favour* of grabbing at ratings. My whole family loved him, we're all in tears.
*added a Canadian "u" as a special tribute to Jennings.

This is what makes him such a good journalist, and why I'm sad that he's gone. Please don't let Ted Koppel take his place. It'll only make me miss Peter more.

I'm generally not one to be deeply affected by the passing of a person I didn't know personally but this is very, very sad news. In our (Canadian) household when I was a child and a teenager we generally tuned into World News Tonight because of Jennings and because he hadn't yet been infected by localnewsitis like the other majors and even the CBC, to some degree.
I can't remember it now (I haven't owned a TV for a few years) but he always used to say the same thing when the stock market was up - use the same phrase - and sometimes my dad and I would say it along with him, as a kind of family-joke thing. I also remember him (Peter Jennings) cracking up over the name "Snoop Doggy Dogg" once and having to check himself, on air, and re-say the sentence.
You could tell he had a great sense of humour, and although he would never outright say what he felt, he could say so much with the slight lift of an eyebrow or cocking his head a little.
Gone too soon. RIP, Peter.

Very heartbreaking. PJ was truly magnificent. One of my favorite memories of him was when he did the 9/11 special, in which he interviewed kids about their feelings on the attacks. What I loved most about it was that he talked to the kids, not at them or down to them. RIP, PJ. You will be missed, now and forever.

When former Prime Minister Trudeau died, I knew that PJ would have the most eloquent tributes even amongst the CDN broadcasts.
