I saw that picture at the salon the other day and had to triple check to make sure I was seeing correctly. The stylist and I were talking about how tacky it was.
Is this type of cake a trend? I don't understand why you would want something that your guests will be eating to look like...that.

And maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but to me it's tacky that she even had a baby shower at all considering it's her second baby.

I just think it's funny. On the sidebar there was a story about Chelsea Clinton's "chic" baby shower with its fabulous 99% gluten-free food (cause apparently only 1% of the 1% can eat gluten). Call me trashy, but given the choice, I'd much rather go to Christina's shower than Chelsea's shower.

I'm not quite sure what this says about me, but I opened up that link to the cake pic and burst out in hysterical laughter. I mean, yeah it is *awful* and I would not want it, but it is kinda glorious in its unabashed awfulty. Ha!

I get the humor of the cake, but geez...you know it's going to be shown to the entire world. Will she have a bachelorette party and they'll have a bunch of cakes featuring penises? I don't think I'd want those to be all over the Internets and whatnot. There is a time and place to keep inside jokes private. And maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but to me it's tacky that she even had a baby shower at all considering it's her second baby. I was under the impression that if one is having a second baby and it's a different sex, it isn't uncommon to have another shower. Getting girl items and whatnot? But I think someone threw this shower for her. I just don't know if posing with the cake was the best idea. If it was on the table and photographed and mentioned that a friend planned the event, then I wouldn't think twice. My guess is that even if someone else was involved, she had some say in the cake, prep, etc. (And I'd skip Chelsea's shower, too. Sounds booooring.)

Her first kid is almost 6, plus she's having girl. I'm much more likely to side-eye another big splashy shower if your first kid is still in diapers and you're having the same sex.

Heh, that cake made me do a spit take. I think it's funny. It's Christina, not someone who has ever been known for class.
As for a second shower - I guess it depends on who you are and where you are economically. Christina can buy her own stuff, she just wanted the party. And I'm sure she invited people who can afford more presents (and maybe different friends from 6 years ago). It's kind of like when you get invited to second weddings. I usually pass because I'm not Christina and I'll be damned if I buy presents for people who don't need them (unless they request no presents or donations to charities).

I also I think tacky cakes are coming back in vogue thanks to hilarious sites like Cake Wrecks. I have yet to go to a second wedding, but I have been to baby showers for moms who already have kids. Though, they tend to be less about gifts, more about the mom wanting an excuse to have people over and eat yummy food and have a tiny glass of champagne. It's hard to go out with one toddler, and there's that worry that two or three will make it impossible. So, any reason to have people over for fun "one last time" is a good one. I've never brought a real gift to a second baby shower, though, other than beer for the non-preggers.

I have to stop for now because I can't contain my laughter. [/off-topic] ETA: Cake Wrecks did have a post on a cake that was similar to Xtina's in spirit. However, Cake Wrecks censored certain delicate parts of the cake, unlike US magazine.

I asked them to tactfully tell people that gifts weren't expected, but some people love buying baby stuff and I got a few cute outfits. I enjoyed the cake and punch . I think it's nice to celebrate the baby and pamper the mom and this can be done without tacky childbirth cakes. Sometimes if the kids are years apart it's good to throw a shower because they may need new baby stuff.
