So she's pretty much a lock for Best Actress? Or could we have an Isabelle Huppert upset? As long as it isn't Natalie!

If Natalie hadn't won for Black Swan, this would be a really exciting race. Ruth should be happy for the nomination, and Meryl probably got in because of her Golden Globes speech. Isabelle is really the only one who could knock out Emma, but so much is going against her, and for Emma (Older female [check] in a foreign film [check] with no other nominations [check] and mostly European work for her career [check], in a comedy [check] about rape [check], and did I mention she's an older woman [check check] It would be a fun shocker though! Emma winning the Oscar for this performance, though, is really more about her charisma and charm in the role. Outside the "Audition" song scene, she doesn't have that much dramatic stuff to do, which is mostly the light but charming screenplays fault, the film's biggest weakness. I really enjoyed it, but La La Land is Hollywood remembering and cheering itself. I watched Easy A tonight for the first time, and one can see even then how much of The IT Factor Emma has. The camera loves her, and her easy charm. That isn't easy, and I don't begrudge her the likely Oscar. It's just not as high level a trapeze act as some other performances that have won Best Actress.

I agree with everything you said. I will say though that even though it wasn't a high level trapeze act of a performance, I think a lesser actress wouldn't have made it look so easy. The other Emma (Watson) was supposed to play that role originally and I just cannot see it.

It looked better on the model, and I do like the pants element. I like Emma, but I find her fashion sense as blah and inconsistent as her career. The Chanel thing was a bright spot, but she seems to have no particular sense of style and just wears what people tell her.

I'm miffed that she's an Oscar frontrunner. I like her, but IMO her performance doesn't warrant a nomination, let alone a win. Hollywood is just so in love with nostalgic stuff that praises Hollywood, they'll lavish these sort of circle jerk movies with praise no matter what.

And I like her although my opinion of her has been lowered since she worked with Woody Allen. Like why is Hollywood cool with Allen pairing up Emma Stone/Colin Firth (or ScarJo/Jackman) romantically? I am so icked out about the age difference that surely a self-respecting actress would also be grossed out by an old man with young wife fantasy? I think Gosling and Stone have both done better work outside of this movie.

Emma's grandmother lives in a retirement community in my town. They're hosting an Oscars viewing party in the building she lives in. I haven't seen any of the nominated movies so I can't speak to Emma's performance, but I find it adorable that her grandmother and all her friends will be sitting around watching Emma possibly win an Oscar.
