It's really common for truck drivers to not sleep for 24, 48 hours, or more when trucking a shipment from one point to another. It's bullshit, but the companies aren't paying for hotels, and they often ask them to deliver on nearly impossible schedules. Heck, most truckers completely own their rig and pay for gas, too. I've met a few folks who make their money that way. It's a very interesting/weird career path. Isn't that why there's a sleeping compartment in the cab and truck stops where people can go to eat and shower? Maybe this accident will get people mad and look into doing something about this. In theory, yes. But that doesn't mean that a trucker has time to use them if they're on a tight deadline.

Unfortunately it's pretty naive of them to believe that such a thing as common decency exists among Harvey Levin and Co. As long as it's making them money, it stays up.

Not all of those big rigs have sleeping compartments. I work for an airline in the cargo department. This one driver would park like 15 minutes down the street and sleep in his truck. We would have to call him to come pick up his shipment, three or four hours after he was supposed to. And it's not just the big trucks where this problem is. We have drivers in their own cars who drive up and down the east coast to deliver one little box with little to no sleep. I'm in Baltimore, most of the drivers went north. This one got into a scary car accident in New Jersey. The man was in his 80s. I'm not sure if he feel asleep at the wheel or what.

I used to work for the Texas trucking industry's lobby group, and some of my duties included updating the constantly changing federal and state regulations and filling orders for official drivers' log books. It was common, though unspoken, knowledge that many companies endorsed drivers keeping two sets of log books--one with the required number of rest hours logged, and the other with actual hours driven for payroll purposes. We made a lot of money on log books.

Did anyone see his interview with Matt Lauer today? I'm not a huge fan of his, but man, I really felt for him when he said he wanted to come back and be the funniest he's ever been and he broke down.
