Yes Best Picture goes to the producers whuch more often than not includes the Director. The Academy limits the number of producers who are eligible per pic to 3. More than that and you have to lobby to be included and convince them of your producing duties. Brad won because he was a producer on 12 years a slave and it won best pic. Although 3 noms for acting isn't too shabby either.

OK, thanks. I suppose it isn't shabby at all, but I didn't see the movies in which he was nominated for acting.

I'm not a fan of Anniston. But I admot she can turn on the sparkle when duty calls. Maybe make her Oscar Host?

I really like her, and I truly do think she'd be popular without the whole Brad Pitt connection. It didn't do that much for Juliette Lewis, for example. I think she was always going to be the breakout star from Friends. I mean, I love Courtney Cox, but she's pretty one note and has proven to be kind of terrible. I remember feeling so bummed for her during her crying scene in that Graceland movie. Lisa Kudrow has a nice little career for herself. I don't really know what to think about the men. I saw Schwimmer in a very depressing movie and he was pretty good. I'm allergic to Joey, and I love Matthew Perry but lord knows he has had his demons that may have prevented going further. I agree with chonie's assessment. I think that the focus on her former spouse kind of says more about others than it does her, in the world where that matters. I like the Audrey parallel, too. Truman haaaaaated her for Holly Golightly! I mean, wow. I guess I just don't think the Oscars should at all feel like they are too good or whatnot for most any star, unless we are talking about Dustin Diamond or something. Didn't these assholes just shun Selma, but basically fellated Roman Polanski not that long ago? All entertainers must be entertaining someone, somewhere, and I'd much rather see any "lesser" star than some creepo like Polanski or Woody Allen. All that said, I skipped the hell out of the Oscars this year. I loved seeing the dress pics, though!

I don't think mentioning her former husband is invalid. Yes she was successful on Friends before they met. Yes she played a bit part in a cult classic in Office Space which any actress could have played. I would marry that movie if it were a person, but flipping the bird and tossing your hair while talking about your pieces of 'flare' doesn't make you a fine actress. I'm guessing me and a number of other people can relate to her characters feeling and would be more than capable of providing a convincing performance.
And Jlo at the Oscars. Even my cat dry heaved the first time he heard. I guess I like my Hollywood old school :-)

Oh, I don't think it is invalid, per se. I just think she has carved a comedy niche for herself, separate from Brad Pitt or that Donovan guy or the Counting Crows guy or whomever! I like when comedy people try out drama, too. Some of my favorite dramatic performances are from Robin Williams. Moreso than a lot of his comedy. People just don't really always seem to respond to comedic actors in serious roles (minus the aforementioned RW), and I kinda like to see it. I haven't seen Cake but am not averse to watching it. I just like her. Then again I'm the one forever taking up for the Kardashians, too! I just always like to challenge the idea of someone not being good enough for something. If anything, I think the Oscars have a bit to prove.

Just because George Clooney made sure we all knew that he'll only show up to the Oscars when he's nominated (he's played a version of himself in how many movies, but in ways that ticked the awards bait boxes, so he's a multi-nominee/winner) doesn't mean it's some sort rule of celebrity that every other star is obliged to follow. I've watched a lot of clips of the Oscars on Youtube and Raquel Welch was a frequent presenter in the 1970s. A bit before my time and maybe she was getting outstanding reviews for her movies and just missed getting nominated in those days, or, the producers thought she was hot, and since she was willing to show up to be a presenter, they kept inviting her back. People like to go on about the Golden Age of the Oscars, but they also brought us things like this. That Jen got so close to the nom with a project like Cake tells me that she would probably make the Best Actress field with an even slightly better overall movie from a bigger studio.

But old-school Hollywood had mediocre actors and fame hos, too. I guess with them we have the benefit of looking at an entire life, so we can process things differently than someone would looking at actresses mid-career. And we can forget about the lesser ones.
I don't know. I just can't be mad at celebs who are just working the game. They are public figures and their career depends on being in the public eye. Why shouldn't they present at the Oscars when invited? Why is that worthy of vomit? Why aren't we having the same conversation in the Dwayne Johnson or Jason Bateman threads?

To be Friends-related, Lisa was a presenter the year she had a shot at BSA nomination for her work in The Opposite of Sex (and deserved it, IMO).

I just find her objectionable on a personal level. Are any of her Friends costars presenting awards? Not even Lisa Kudrow who has the only critical acclaim/noms among them? Jen's there because she married Brad, pure and simple.
I look forward to Becky Connor and Mallory Keaton presenting at the Oscars soon too if being an awesome sitcom charater is all it takes.
