It's too bad she seems to crave controversy and put her foot in her mouth so often. I just finished watching season 3 of Girls, and I actually thought it was pretty funny. Which is saying a lot, because I hated the first season until the end, and then I hated the second half of the second season. I was ready to hate-watch a bit of season 3, and it actually won be over. Though apparently season 4 sucks? I think S4 is actually the best season so far. Hannah actually showed a lot of growth, and not in a super contrived or Mary Sue-ish way.

So she's joining Gwyneth Paltrow, Blake Lively, Jessica Alba, and a bunch of other women celebrities in entering the girly service journalism world. Specifically, a newsletter called Lenny, that combines fashion/politics/finance/health/and so forth, for her audience of urban progressive millennials. What is it with these women? Why do they make it as big movie/TV stars and decide to start one of the millions of slight variations of Cosmopolitan magazine? Isn't that a huge step down? Do they even make any money off these products? It doesn't seem to get them any respect. And it's not like the world doesn't have enough Cosmo/Seventeen/Bust/Redbook/Marie Claire/Jezebel/most of Buzzfeed/The Cut clones as it is. Why would Lena move from an interesting, controversial show and book with a distinctive authorial voice to focus on manicures and fluff profiles of Elizabeth Warren?

We are blessed, blessed I tell you, to have these accomplished women share their opinions and immense knowledge of the world with us. How would we know how to yawn or steam our vaginas without Gwyneth? Where would we get our Southern Preppy clothes if not for Reese? If it weren't for Blake, I might not see the gentle charm of Antebellum living. I can only imagine how much my life will improve once I start reading the privileged hipster musings of Lena!

I should read back a few pages, but are the stories with her sister true? Please tell me that she was being controversial on purpose.

To the best if my knowledge, she never retracted.

To the best if my knowledge, she never retracted. Oh my. I like her for her positive body image, and not straving herself to fit Holywood standards. I had never read any of that stuff until someone in my pregnancy group used her as an example on why older kids shouldn't ever be alone with babies.

I think Lena Dunham is a compulsive liar who frequently says things to get a reaction and set herself apart from the crowd. There's no reason to believe any of her stories.

I think Lena Dunham is a compulsive liar who frequently says things to get a reaction and set herself apart from the crowd. There's no reason to believe any of her stories. I assumed that her book of essays (which I only skimmed since I quickly realized it wasn't worth my time) were partially fictionalized, or at least goosed up anecdotes. I assume the same thing when I read David Sedaris or watch Larry David. I have grown to like Lena a little more (I used to find her obnoxious). I do think that because she's pudgy and ugly, she gets a ton of shit she wouldn't get if she were beautiful. There are plenty of hot actresses & models who post selfies on instagram wearing bikinis. When Lena does it, it is viewed as an act of provocation that is meant to offend people and get attention. I have never been able to come up with a valid reason why her being naked on a TV show, or being unashamed to wear a bikini, is inherently offensive except that people are repulsed by her body shape. And so now I'm one of the people who thinks it's cool that she follows the rules for hot people (show us your body as much as possible) rather than the rules for fat people (cover up your disgusting body and be ashamed).

She's recently slimmed down and lost a lot of weight. Which is her prerogative, of course. But what does it say about the initial message that she was trying to put out there? Or was she trying to put a message out there? Perhaps she's always been an exhibitionist, regardless of body size. Perhaps she was never trying to put out a message, other than writing and exhibiting her self.
