Bringing this over and responding in Kanye's thread since this line of discussion is about him and not his wife. I'm not so sure his "talent" is still there, certainly not his respect. I actually hope not, not in this current incarnation of Kanye. The talent and respect are still there. Yeezy's currently at the top of the R&B/Hip Hop charts with two of them - "Four Five Seconds" and "All Day." A hit is a hit is a hit. If we're talking about success or respect decreasing on the pop/mainstream level, then that's different. Rihanna is the only black artist consistently hitting the top of the pop charts, and her current hit features Kanye. Honestly, hitting the top of the pop charts is not an accurate (or realistic) measure of a black artist's success, but again, he's still doing it. So I would say it appears that Kanye is doing fine to me.

Anyone watching the Billboards? WTF was his performance? It was bizarre. They silenced/censored most of his vocals, and the pyrotechnics were set to level 10. So, basically his performance was a silent screen with lots and lots of fire. For most of the two songs (which sounded great when they weren't silencing him) you couldn't even see that a person was on the stage. It was just... fire.

Kanye is the great and powerful Oz. Do not question his power and authority over all of the music land!

He apparently sang the uncensored version of the song, which TMZ says is full of the N word. He didn't show up to rehearsal, which is why it was as chopped up as it was, the censor button frantically being mashed by some panicked backstage person.

Someone should have turned off his mike and rushed Taylor Swift up there to perform instead.

He didn't show up to rehearsal, which is why it was as chopped up as it was, the censor button frantically being mashed by some panicked backstage person. He's apparently whining now that they over-censored the song, and he couldn't do the dress rehearsal because of some problem with his throat. That said, he submitted the lyrics to the show and the censor was just following along and bleeping at the appropriate moments. Too bad, Kanye. If you're going to choose to do that kind of music on network TV, you're going to have to live with how they handle it.

He's right. They didn't handle it well. He was way over censored. Entire verses without profanity were silenced. It was like the person in charge was unfamiliar with the song and erred on the side of caution, only allowing one or two sentences through. Skipping out on rehearsals is shitty, but it's not like this song is obscure. It was used for the trailer of Wolf on Wall Street, and the censor could have just listened to the song a few times to get a sense of when to bleep words (Kanye also bleeps himself at some venues).
Did anyone address the epic fire? That seemed like an error, too. Why have him on to sing that song if silence and a blazing fire are what TV audiences are going to see?

While I agree that he was overly censored, if I had to choose between the musician and the network & that parent group that reports every little thing to the FCC, with my job being on the line if I let something through, you best believe I'm cutting all sound. Especially if that musician could not make it to rehearsals and is known for going off script.

Then why invite him to perform that song? Ask him to do another one. Also, he goes off script when speaking, but I haven't heard of him doing anything like that while performing music. He has a fine record of self-censoring his lyrics when asked to do so on network TV.

He has a fine record of self-censoring his lyrics when asked to do so on network TV. When inviting him, they probably believed he would come to rehearsals. But he didn't, and gave them a lyric sheet that contained the n-word after every line for All Day. Even me, as a (former) fan, would feel uncomfortable measuring when to silence him not knowing how the performance would go. Would he rap faster or slower than the recorded song? I don't think he would have been nearly as censored if he had rehearsed beforehand with the awards show. And seven seconds (is that still the delay time) would not be enough for me flying blind to be comfortable that I got them all. Hence, better safe than sorry and I keep my job.
