OMG I’m in shock. What horrible news. He did Black Panther post-diagnosis and in the midst of treatment?!
Time for a rant: Colon cancer killed my mother. Diagnosed at 60 and dead at 61. (My MIL was lucky, caught at stage 1.) A gastroenterologist explained to me that colon cancer is one of the most preventable when caught early (ie routine colonoscopy checkups, before symptoms emerge), but once things start to advance, things get very difficult.
Because young folks like Chadwick don’t get routine colonoscopies as it’s not part of standard protocols, colon cancer is often not caught until symptoms emerge and things have advanced significantly. The gastroenterologist told me that if it was up to him, the age for starting routine preventative colonoscopies would be earlier - 40 at least. I think it should be 30.

I had to read the headline several times before I could comprehend it. I don't think I've been this stunned by a celebrity death since Anthony Bourdain. Fuck cancer.
It's staggering to think of all he accomplished after his diagnosis. It feels hollow to say this somehow, but he truly made the most of his time.

I’ve been having colonoscopies since I was 35 and I’m going in for my next one on Wednesday. The benefit of having regular colonoscopies in addition to catching it early is that polyps can be removed. The polyps are what turn into cancer. In addition to playing T’Challa, he also played James Brown, Jackie Robinson, and Thurgood Marshall. It’s just devastating.

I woke up to this news this morning. How shocking and sad. Ironic that he died the day MLB was celebrating Jackie Robinson Day and I believe it was also the birthday of Jack Kirby, who co-created Black Panther.
I know what movie this old white lady will be re-watching today.

Oh my God, I am just stunned by this. He did so much while battling this and most people had no idea. I can’t even imagine how hard that was for him and his family.
I have a co-worker whose father died young from colon cancer, and because of that he and his sister have been getting regular colonoscopies since they were about 30. We probably should all start then.

Formal colonoscopy recommendations are for everyone starting age 50 and, for those with family history, to start at 40 or 10 years prior to the age at which your relative had cancer, whichever is earlier. It's actually like pulling teeth to get many people to go for their colonoscopy so more awareness is always good.

Terrible. Forty-three is much too young. It's incredible he filmed Black Panther during treatment.

Like others have said, the thing that got me right away--after realizing he had died--was the realization that he'd made all of this incredible work while battling cancer. The strength of spirit that took...I am just in awe. There have been a lot of big losses in the last couple of years but this one makes me really, really sad in a way no other person's loss has.
This is much shallower, but I am wondering how Tom and Lorenzo took the news. What am I saying, they are devastated, of course. But they LOVED Chadwick for revolutionizing the red carpet for men. He was stylish and daring with his choices in a way most straight men don't even attempt--and he always looked great. I think they regarded him as a trailblazer for other men to look up and take inspiration from and now he's gone. I think Chadwick's style is another thing that leaves a residue of joy and celebration on my image of him.
