My friend knows him quite well and absolutely adores him. She lost over a hundred pounds on his program and became friends with him along the way. He emails her frequently and sent her oodles of darling baby clothes when she had her daughter. He's like a big brother to her.
He's been incredibly kind and supportive, and she's not the needy type who demands the attention--I was shocked to hear that she knew him and respected him so much, because she's incredibly bright and capable and "together." I suppose I ignorantly assumed that only emotionally needy women who really thrived on his kind of enthusiastic encouragement would be associated with him. I'm sort of ashamed of myself in the face of his obvious kindness and loyalty. He always bugged me, still does a little, but I give him his due for the good he does for so many--and not just when the cameras are on. If someone I respect as much as I respect my friend admires Richard, I think I should respect/admire him a little bit, too. But the outfits make it difficult.

Wasn't he in the news for slapping someone in an airport a while ago? That was one of the best celeb stories EVER. Some man in an airport recognized Richard and said, "Hey eveybody, it's Richard Simmons. Let's drop our bags and boogie to the oldies," or something along those lines. Not a clever or even particularily nasty comment, but Richard went ballistic and smacked him in the face. The only thing I know about Richard is that he used to host an incredbily cheesy show called "Richard Simmons' Dream Maker" and would open every show by shouting, "Hello, dreamers!" at the camera. Funny stuff, even though it was supposed to be emotional and heart-breaking.

One of the reasons why I like Richard is his commitment to striped shorts, no matter the season or the reason. So, it's cool to hear he's loyal to friends as well as his wardrobe. I'll always love him for the entertainment he's given me many a late night. All that crazy weeping he did during his infomercials -- it came off totally sincere and, simultaneously, insane. So bizarre.

Maybe he could borrow some pants from the king of loud ugly pants --- Paris Latsis.

The fact that Richard could be a diva just makes me love him more. Sort of how I feel about ScarJo. Also, Richard will always be great in my book for being part of one of the funniest episodes of Whose Line is it Anyway?

Click here to watch a clip. I laughed my ass off on that one. That is one funny show, and that is one of the funniest skits I've ever seen.
