That clip was hysterical... Richard was very cute in that, flashing little signals and smiling.
I almost forgot my favorite Richard Simmons moment, on the Late Show with David Letterman. Richard dressed up as a turkey for Thanksgiving, and I think he pissed off Dave- he was standing too close to him or something like that. Dave gets so angry that he chases after Richard, spraying him with a fire extinguisher. Richard used to come on the show a lot, but I don't think he's been on since. Dave loves that clip, and shows it all the time.

I was always turned off by the cheesy outfits and that interfered with my impression that he's a good guy who loves helping people. Shallow way to judge someone, but god, do those outfits looks horrible.
Anyhow, one thing put me on his side. Years ago my boyfriend-at-the-time and I were listening to the Howard Stern show. We'd never really listened to that show and so we weren't prepared for how nasty and cruel HS can be -- especially considering it's put in the form of entertainment.
Simmons was on the show and HS started mocking him very, very viciously. RS was genuinely shocked and was saying in this tone of absolute disbelief, "Why are you talking to me this way? I've met your family! I've been at your house! I can't believe you're doing this!"
Of course, this just got HS going even more, like someone who loves twisting the knife in a person and RS sounded (and probably was) like he was in tears.
Maybe you have to have a certain personality to think Howard Stern and his blood-letting kind of "humor" is funny, but I didn't and carved out a little spot in my heart for poor Richard Simmons, who couldn't believe someone was skewering him with such relish.

I couldn't agree with you more. I remember that show. It was horrifying to me. I am all for ragging on people, and I can probably make Stern himself blush, but he was just plain cruel & nasty to Richard. I realize that Richard is hard to take for some and just plain insane at times, but I truly believe the man has an enormous heart and genuinely cares for all the heavy folks he helps. For that, I give him a pass on some of his other antics.

One of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life was Richard Simmons and a few of his Sweatin to the Oldies counterparts on the Howard Stern show a few years back. Howard and his cronies rigged pies, cakes, donuts, pizza and fried chicken frm strings in the ceiling. During the interview all these greasy foods started coming down from the ceiling and dangling in front of Ricky Simmons and his tons o'fun friends. Richard got pretty upset at Howard and said, "Why would you do that? Why are you so mean?" I don't remember much else but Howard of course thought this was the funniest shit ever. Oh yeah, it was.

Except from what I heard, one of Simmons' success stories on that show was so traumatized by this that he promptly gained back an astronomical amount of weight -- but, yeah, I guess that is the "funniest shit ever"... Takes all kinds...

It is funny. I think it would have been even better if Howard had a bunch of anorexics on there instead. Too bad that guy gained back all the weight, I'm sure it was all Howard's fault!!

Howard Stern gets old fast. He's like a 14 year old boy. (Do we have a topic on him? If not, I'll start one).
Anyhoo, I think Richard probably CAN BE an incredibly self-centered, humorless twit. BUT...he's done a lot of good for a lot of people. So, I can give him credit for what he's accomplished, while not liking him personally. It's kinda the same way I feel about Oprah.

That guy who gained back all that weight died of it.
Richard has a HUGE sense of humor, and can be self deprecating and laugh at himself.
What he does'nt like is the kind of humor that is SHAMING, that makes fun of others, probably because he had enough of it himself and has seen the suffering of others and does'nt find it funny.
Humour at the expense of the feelings of other people, no, not everyone can handle it, nor should they.

If you don't want to be openly mocked and humiliated, maybe you shouldn't go on the Howard Stern Show. I'm just saying.

No shit. Sorry for the guy and all, but no one made him eat himself to death, not even Ba-ba booey.
