Wow, I had pretty much convinced myself that this was a bait and switch. Good for him for being able to do this. Also, for his sake I'm glad he's okay with male pronouns since I can't believe the media would be all that sensitive to it if he felt differently. I only learned that he was an athlete fairly recently and I'm kind of amazed at the life he's had. Yes! He was a huge deal as an athlete, and was very famous way before the Kardashians were. In the US, he was a huge deal in the '70s. As a child of the '80s, I never experienced it directly, but apparently he was a massive sex symbol. He was one of the OG Wheaties box athletes. And I agree. I am wincing at her concerned/strained faces and the Qs. Sometimes reporters have to play dumb in order to get the best answers out of their subjects and present the best story. At least he is answering things quite well. He's well spoken.

This is obviously brave as hell and good for him... but what's the deal with his eyes? Botched surgery? The uncoordinated blinking was so distracting, I just had to listen to most of the interview.

I don' know if Diane Sawyer is dumbing down her questions because she presumes the audience is at that level or if she's truly pretty ignorant about transsexualism, but she is annoying me. Good for him for going public with this. He seems happier and relaxed here. That's what I wondering. At first it seemed like she was merely dumbing down her questions, but then I started questioning what level of understanding she has about gender, sex, transitioning, and transexualism. I thought a simple "Sex is between the legs and gender is between the ears" would've helped a bit. I was sort of bored throughout the whole thing, but admit I got a little lump in my throat and teared up when he said his big thing is wanting to be able to wear nail polish long enough for it to chip instead of having to take it off. That got me.

Yeah, she seemed a little naive in her questions but Bruce seemed very candid and open about his experiences. It took a lot of courage for him, and the fact that he tried transitioning 30 years ago just broke my heart. To suppress your authentic self for so long is tragic. I hope he finds peace and joy from here on out.

Also, I have barely ever seen their reality show, but the parts I have seen, he always seemed so tightly wound. It's really amazing to see him now. It's like a weight has been taken off his shoulders.

I was glad to see he has the support of his kids, and mother. I missed the entire first hour, and a chunk of the second. Did they mention Kris' reaction? Is he going to change names? I know there were references to "her", but I missed if Bruce has any intention of having the full surgery.

1. I don't think Kris has commented yet other than tweeting that she will watch the program with Bruce.
2. I think he implied he will change names, but wants to hold off on announcing it because it will be a clusterfuck and I think he wants to focus on the simple announcement first.
3. He is focusing on the mind, and changes to the body will be private (Unless he wants to share, but it sounds like any surgery, like most people, will be a private experience. He stated that he felt documenting things like that would be exploitative.).

Good for him for going public with this. He seems happier and relaxed here. One of the voiceovers said that only 8% of Americans know someone who is transgender. I think her questions were trying to educate the majority of people who don't understand the difference between cross-dressing and being transgender and answer some basic questions many have. I thought she did a good job balancing the need for education, letting Bruce tell his story and including some light-hearted moments. Bruce is very brave and I thought the support shown by family members and friends was touching and I hope this interview will enlighten many people. Of course, I also expect some disgusting attacks and protests.

This interview changed my mother's mind. She's no longer of the mindset that this was for publicity, but understood that Bruce had been denying his true self for all these years.
