Do I have the dishonor of starting the Adam Sandler thread? I did a search and didn't find an old one. Apologies in advance if I missed it. Native American actors have walked off the set of ''The Ridiculous Six'' in protest of racially derogatory and misogynist jokes in the film. The movie sounds disgusting and I hope Sandler catches hell.

I'm just wondering, at what point this last year with all the controversy about the R**skins, etc, someone DIDN'T say, "um, maybe we wanna dial some of this back a little?" How very dumb. It's distasteful.

Ug. Good for them. Western comedies feel so dated these days. It seems like there's always something in them that are offensive to Native people, other races, and women. It's a period that gets romanticized, too, even though it sounds like it would be miserable and brutal to live it.
ETA: Also, a Million Ways to Die in the West sucked.

After all the shit SONY talked about Adam Sandler's terrible movies, I am really surprised someone gave him money to make another one!

My understanding is that this is being made through Sandler's own production company, with the agreement that Netflix will serve as "distributor."

Defamer had a 2012 draft if the script and excerpted some of the Native American "jokes." I'm embarrassed for whoever is passing that off as comedy writing.

I see. This is an intelligent social satire addressing negative stereotypes. Written and produced by Adam Sandler. Now THAT's funny!!

I was actually very fond of Sandler back in the day. SNL, Wedding Singer...and I really liked him in Funny People. I thought Punch Drunk Love was good, too. I think he can "serious" act. It's a shame that he has devolved, or whatever. Or maybe just not grown at all? I think racist and painful stereotypes of Native Americans are finally getting the scrutiny and condemnation deserved. I also think this is one of the very best things about the Internet. Sure, there is waaaaay too much throw-away information, but it's excellent for disseminating info like how how terrible these jokes are, and why it matters.
I think I probably overestimated Sandler, back in the day.

I think Sandler was funny/charming at one point. Sure, his comedies had some dumb stuff, but they mostly made fun of ridiculous individuals rather than sweeping, cheap jokes about an entire people and nothing but fart jokes. Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore are just silly fun, and The Wedding Singer is cute and charming. I thought he was a good dramatic actor too and I have no idea why he stopped doing it.
Now, by his own admission, he's basically given up. He's stated that he determines where his movies will be set by where he and his family want to take a vacation. He shows up, half-asses it for a few weeks in front of the camera, then puts out his shitty movie and for some reason a lot of people pay to see them.
I was surprised to learn that Sandler was making a new movie because I was surprised he felt it worth the effort to drag his ass in front of the camera. But I guess there is money to be made though I admit I don't understand how Netflix's business model works or why SNdler chose this route when he was still doing okay at the box office. They are the distributor, but it isn't like they are selling individual tickets to this one movie. Does Sandler get a set fee every time someone streams it? That might be smart - more people willing to take a risk on crap when it doesn't cost extra. I hope Netflix insisted that people have to watch more than 20 minutes before he gets his fee.
