I let batgirl get a coloured chunk of hair when she was 7. She wanted it and paid for it. I'm sure there's "let's create a blonde family!" but there's also "kid asked, hair grows, so I said yes." (which is where I think Gwen lands.)

I just let my 9 year old get a purple streak in his hair. But I remember in the MJ era that someone told me that hair bleaching wasn't that uncommon in CA for kids, which I thought then was crazy. I think my parents got a holiday card that had a bleached family on it around that time and we all discussed it endlessly.

I think it's a lot more cultural baggage when a Michael Jackson or Tori Spelling encourages or allows their kids to adopt "WASP" beauty standards at such an early age. Seems like it's just passing on the parent's self-image problems.

The bleached hair could just be from summer pool time--chlorine and sun really lightens-up hair. Both of my girls (who are naturally brunette) ended up with much lighter hair and bleached, blond ends from spending several days a week at the pool.

A color chunk is so different than bleaching, though. The fumes from the bleaching would be dangerous and harsh. And to do that to a little child!
I have an almost five year old, and I'd let her use some of that color spray if she asked. (She hasn't!) But to semi-permanantly change the color of a young child's hair to a blonder blond is just telling them that their hair doesn't look good naturally.

I get my hair dyed blonde regularly - it's not that big of a deal. And if the child has asked to go blond (which may or may not be the case - we don't know) then allowing that is not telling them that their natural hair doesn't look good, but rather that we're okay letting them experiment with their look. I have no idea wear Tori lands on this spectrum, I just don't think that letting your child dye their hair is necessarily a sign of bad parent. Hair grows. There are many hair dying processes, most of which are not at all torturous for a kid. I just don't see getting worked up over it.

My youngest is naturally blond but wanted red hair when she was 9, so ::shrug::. She got her hair dyed. I wonder if some people, think kids going blond is interpreted as more shallow than dying a child's hair darker.
Maybe Tori's kids had to deal with head lice (90% of lice is immune to usual treatments). Hair bleach seems like a two-for-one cure, in that case.

My 7 yo got her hair permed & dyed red because she wanted to look like Annie and our neighbor, who worked at a beauty parlor, offered to do it professionally for free. That daughter loved changing her hair style from the time she could brush it herself. When my nephew was 9 he decided to get a buzz cut at the beginning of summer and then not cut his hair for a year to see how long it would get. Some kids have strong opinions about their hair styles. In the absence of evidence to prove Tori did this over her kids' objections, I'm going to figure they wanted it themselves.
