Isn’t Brown the refuge of the celeb kid? I kind of applauded Apple for choosing a school, elite though it might be, in flyover country. Hope she and her brother get degrees and real careers.
At least, that's how it used to be. Not sure if that's changed.
If the process is still the same, I could see a celebrity's kid thinking it might be the easiest way for them to attend an Ivy.
I think it's more that there's no required core classes you have to complete aside from those in your major.
Ie when I was in undergrad I had to take something like:
2 semesters of a language
1 math
1 lab science and the accompanying lab
2 religion courses (Catholic college)
2 English/Lit courses
1 Philosphy
1 Art/music of some sort
1 Freshman Seminar
and then some stupid bullshit computer courses like "using Microsoft Access for Success!"
Then for my major I had to take 10 classes with like 5 required
I think at Brown they're like "Do you know that you suck really hard at art? Then you don't have to do it! Are you already speaking fluent Tagalog at home? Then you don't need to do a second language do something that interests you.. have you looked at Underwater Basketweaving?"
TBH, those gen ed courses caused me more stress than the ones in my major. I mean I can do comparative world religions or poly sci or bobble my way through biology but Spanish? AWFUL. I mean my roommate and I dragged out that math requirement til senior year and I actually went to the professor on the first day and said "Hi, I'm L and this is S and we're graduating seniors in social work. We'll NEVER need to graph a parabola or find the the cosine of X. We need this course to graduate. If we show up to every class, do all the homework, take every test, participate.. can you just give us a D?" and the professor was like "honestly? Seems reasonable"
