From what I can recall from around the time of Edgar's suicide, he had been in very poor health and felt he was on the verge of becoming a burden to his family; also he and Joan were separated at the time. Then he left half of his money to Melissa and half to Joan. I'm not sure how much/many assets were involved, but I do remember reading an article years ago about how Melissa was sitting pretty, financially, while Joan had to get out there and hustle for a paycheck to pay the bills. Joan was extremely resentful about that.
But this is a dim memory (about the finances, anyway...the poor health and separation are documented) and most likely from Joan's POV, so grain of salt, etc.

Joan may come out of her coma, but I don't think she'll ever be on tv again... she's retired now. And hopefully Melissa has saved enough money to last her for a good long time too, because she doesn't have the personality to stand on her own.
The only think I ever remember her doing solo was that horrible "I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!" show, and that involved dropping a couple of gallons of scorpions & spiders in her pants, and she bitched about how they were humiliating her the whole time. Not exactly a resume-bolstering line item for her career.

Lawsuit was inevitable. I think it was highly irresponsible of the doctor to perform surgery on an 81 yo without taking proper precautions. No pre-op testing. Just...I saw a problem, let's cut. No...

I agree. I had the same procedure in 2008, and I was checked into a hospital, weighed, and had to consult with the anesthesiologist beforehand.

I've not cared for Joan's mean brand of comedy (and how it seemed to be getting meaner in recent years), but I will say this for her: she hustled. QVC is one of my guilty tv pleasures and she is out there selling her stuff and working it. And I will always admire her for that.

An only child dealing with one remaining sick parent... welcome to my world. I've heard JR does not want to be on life support. I mean this in the best way, but MR had her mom with her a loooong time. I think of friends who lost parents at 10, 16, younger... She's really been blessed.

I can understand remaining on life support if they're trying to determine the actual status of your brain function, oxygen deprivation, etc. But once that's been determined and the outlook is bleak, then if JR didn't want to be on life support it would be best to honor her wishes.
At her age and with her assets, wouldn't she have a will (and a living will at that) that also outlined some sort of DNR? Going into surgery at any age is risky with being under general, but at her age it increases the chances of death or serious problems like a heart attack.
I've enjoyed her brand of comedy to some degree over the decades, but I do think she has been a lot more harassing as of late. There's comedy and being tongue-in-cheek and then there's tasteless, cruel comments. Could just be getting crankier in her old age.
I hope that whatever the outcome all will find their peace.

Disconnecting a patient from life support, with or without a DNR, can take longer than most people realize. I imagine the hospital has a committee of doctors and nurses who get together and discuss each case, and then make the decision. I had to go through it with both my parents. Two and half weeks with my mother(who didn't have a living will) and a week with my father (who did have a living will).
