No kidding. But I don't think she sees the same Joan we see when she looks in the mirror.

I remember hearing that she used to make fun of former MTV VJ Karen "Duff" Duffy for wearing these big hats all the time. Well, Duff goes on a talk show and reveals that she had been wearing the hats to hide the fact that she was losing her hair from CHEMO-she didn't want people to know she had cancer. Someone mentioned Rivers, and she started crying, saying that of all the things to pick on her for, that hurt the most. Karen Duffy didn't have cancer she had sarcoidosis - a rare painful inflammatory disease. My sister in law has been treated for it for years - she lost her partnership due to the illness - she is Swedish and I guess it is more prevalent in them. You do have to have some sort of chemo for it. Ourch, I'm so sorry about your sister-in-law. I always crack up when I think about the time Marlee Matlin called her a b*tch in ASL.

I didn't listen to the whole interview (I skipped to minute 20 after listening to about three minutes at the start of the program). Basically, the radio program was some sort of round table discussion with Joan, Jackie Collins, a plant photographer and Darcus Howe (an activist from Trinidad who has made a film/documentary). Skip to minute 20 and Darcus is discussing his new documentary/film. Not sure what it is about but Darcus is black his first wife was white and they have some children (apparently he wasn't around much when they were growing up). In a scene in his film/documentary, he is shown berating this first wife, telling her that she has no idea what it is to be persecuted by those who were not black, including her. Joan sort of steps in and says that race is stupid and that the person is what is important, not the color of their skin. She says that she wants people from different backgrounds to have kids and blend together, taking their best qualities and best parts of their backgrounds and culture blah blah blah. A few minutes later, Darcus says that "black offends Joan" and she freaks out saying that black does not offend her and that Darcus basically just said that she was racist. She demands an apology and just sort of yells and starts insulting Darcus because he left his wife and kids and is insisting that he is insulted her and called her a racist by saying "black offends Joan." Darcus tries to say that he meant the word "black" offended her because of her earlier statements about how she thinks race is stupid not because she hates black people or something. She is still upset and the host sort of manovures the discussion and starts talking to the plant photographer. I stopped listening at this point.
So a rather strange freak-out. She did overreact but the dude was being pretty condescending and I would probably be all "WHAT?!?" if someone said "black offends you" so, I don't know. I can't figure why people would complain (unless something else happened after or before I stopped listening), but maybe I am just used to US talk shows where freak-outs and yelling are encouraged.

I despise her for a number of reasons. I think I must have read the same interview as someone several posts back – She was lamenting the obsession with thinness in Hollywood and how her daughter thinks she’s fat at 90 pounds; in the very next breath she starts making malicious remarks about Alicia Silverstone for having gained a few pounds at some point.
Sorry, I don’t think the Kate Winslet remark was the least bit amusing. Come on, this is why young girls get so screwed up over body image. I mean, Rivers is an elderly woman who is spitefully laughing at a young woman who put on some weight! There’s something really, really sick about that.
And her fashion comments are ridiculous! She criticized Bjork’s swan outfit as though she’d cannily spotted a fashion faux pas when, as far as I’m concerned, Bjork was obviously thumbing her nose at the whole obsession with fashion that Rivers represents. But then she approved of Lara Flynn Boyles idiotic pink ballet get-up saying something like, “She’s just in the spirit of the evening!”
I’d love to know if it’s ever crossed Melissa Rivers’ mind that if JR wasn’t her mother, she’d be torn up and thrown to the wolves herself.

I think the relationship with her daughter is totally creepy. Cut the damn cord already.
Lately I find watching her to be really cringe-inducing and painful; she perpetually sounds as if she's just stumbled out of happy hour. I feel embarrassed every time I hear her slurring foghorn voice.
That said, I laugh like a maniac every time I see that clip of her not recognizing Will Ferrell.

Along with what whitefalcon said: My improv teacher is also one of the founders of Second City, where Joan spent some of the early days of her career. My teacher said that while Joan was unquestioningly smart and talented, she relied on toilet humor to get laughs, because she really needed the validation from the audiences.
What still amazes me is that Joan is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Barnard College.

Joan was funny once upon a time(before most of you were born, lol), but has gone way, way over the edge into "MASK" territory--seriously, folks--she looks like a burn victim(no offense to burn victims, believe me)--but worse, as she did it all to herself. IHMO she looks worse than Jacko. Her eyes are just little slits in a hard-as-a-shell "face". it's truly horrible!
I saw her on QVC(channel surfing!)last weekend, shilling her costume stuff...and it's even more disturbing in almost-3D. SCARY.

Melissa doesn't strike me as being as mean-spirited as her mom. She tries to, but it doesn't come off the same way. She seems to stick more to clothing, and less about weight. (It's one thing to say, that person picked an outfit that made her LOOK fat and dumpy, or she's not wearing the correct undergarments-Star Jones, I'm looking at you. But don't make fun of someone for say, having wide hips, or a not-anorexic look).
