Sorry guys, the Fred Rogers was a marine thing is just an urban legend. He never served in any branch of the military, he went right into TV work after college. Here's his bio from the non-profit he founded. He was still an awesome guy though. Topic: I'd never heard of the allegations against Cosby before. I used to love him, but the past few years I've just found his cranky old man shtick annoying.

Re- Mr. Rogers sweaters: I read a lovely article he wrote for Parents magazine years ago. It was about raising a gracious child, and he was writing about teaching them to appreciate gifts not so much for the gift but for the thought behind the gift. According to the article his mother made those sweaters for him and he wore them to show his gratitude for the gifts.
I really wish I could find the article again because it was beautifully written and was the first time I'd ever considered him as anything more than Mr. Rogers the character.

I was afraid to look into his background because I didn't want to find anything bad.

All these TV dads are being ruined for me. Tim Allen is a conservative shitheel, Stephen Collins molested children, and all the stories about Cosby coming out over the years. If John Goodman turns out to be a secret scumbag, I'll die.

Tim Allen served hard time for being a crack/cocaine dealer, so that dude did some hard living long before he got famous.

I just think that Dyson (whom I don't think is that good of a scholar) and Buress, who I think is hilarious, miss the point when they try to tie the sexual assaults with Cosby's political beliefs. It makes as much sense as tying it to his comedy or his TV shows. He should be on trial for every one of these sexual assault cases, should be in jail if convicted, and every cent of his vast Jell-O fortune should go to the victims. But that has nothing to do with whether he's right about rap music and pulling your pants up. And people lose the argument when they try to conflate them. The discussion shouldn't be "How dare Cosby talk shit about other people? He's a hypocrite!" But "Bill Cosby is a rapist. Full stop." Maybe people mention how much of a hypocrite Cosby is because if you happen to be black and you are going to criticize the black community, you may have more credibility if you didn't have elephant-sized skeletons in your closet (especially when mainstream society is watching). It's just a thought. I might be more willing to listen to that type of criticism from someone like Barack Obama* or maybe even Oprah. (By the way, I am still hoping that the POTUS doesn't have any signicant skeletons in his closet either-like a mistress, a secret love child, etc.) By the way, this is the first time I am hearing of any Cosby assault allegations. Since Cosby didn't sue this other comedian (yet) for slander, I guess there is some element of truth to it. I'm amazed that he managed to get away with it for this long (if true). Famous people and rape. It's not the first time. And honestly, while Bill Cosby is (if the allegations are true) a horrible human being, strictly speaking he's not a hypocrite. As I recall, he said young black people should stop using slang, listening to hip hop, having kids outside marriage and engaging in petty crime - none of which Cosby does. Obviously, rape is way, way worse than any of those things, but still, hypocrisy isn't his problem. What bugs me is Dyson and Buress specifically went after him for being condescending and smug. Which is stupid, because that's not Bill Cosby's problem here. Who cares if a rapist is smug? He can be as smug as he wants in a supermax prison, for all I care. It's ridiculous and insane to go after a rapist because he ignored structural poverty and talked down to black kids in his lectures. And honestly, I think by only bringing up the rape accusations in the context of disagreeing with Cosby's political beliefs, it trivialises rape. Dyson and Buress are just using it as a way to score points off him. If you only ever bring it up in the context of disagreeing with the pound cake speech, you're basically saying that the women he raped only matter because they can be used to bring down Cosby's reputation in the political arena. And this is dumb, because (a) Bill Cosby could be the head of ISIS and it would have nothing to with whether or not his political views are correct, and far, far, more importantly (b) the rapes are what matters. The stuff about hip hop shouldn't even be part of the discussion.

thneed, you articulated my feelings on Dyson & Burress perfectly. I struggled with what to say without sounding as if I was defending Cosby. He is right about young black men, even as he's dead wrong in his violation of women.

As I recall, he said young black people should stop using slang, listening to hip hop, having kids outside marriage and engaging in petty crime - none of which Cosby does. He had numerous affairs outside of his marriage and one of the offspring of the woman he cheated with could have been his lovechild. She was later shown not to be but the possibility very much existed. As for the rest, he's allegedly harrassed, drugged, and assaulted women. Listening to hip-hop, using slang, and even petty crime pale in comparison and, frankly, is an irrelevant detail. If he's wagging his finger at some black kid for using slang because it's destructive to the black community when it's far more destructive to drug and rape someone, he's a hypocrite of the highest order.

If John Goodman turns out to be a secret scumbag, I'll die. According to one of his neighbors in New Orleans, John Goodman is, I quote, "kind of an asshole." Third hand hearsay, I know. Edit: If all this is true about Cosby, he's not the first, and he won't be the last, to get away with completely heinous shit because of he is a celebrity. But this shit is horrible and makes me rage. Really, Camille, is the money worth being married to a POS rapist?
