I have to ask, was Shelburne Falls really that high up on your must-visit list before? My grandmother lives very close to there and I've been to Shelburne Falls many times. I agree that some of the comments are heinous (although not new to anyone at this point, surely?) but I am SUPER not willing to judge the guy who says he "doesn't want to make anything awkward"--I wouldn't want to publicly engage with Cosby either.

Yeah, I'm not going to write off the place quite yet either. I also grew up in a small town in Western Mass so I'm pretty familiar with the attitudes expressed by the people in the article. Most folks just go on about their lives and don't pay attention to things that don't concern them, and are incredibly reluctant to get involved in such issues. It's very much a "you mind your own business and I'll mind my own business" kind of culture.

The espresso machine donation reminds me of that episode of Parks and Rec where the fancy political strategist in town temporarily bought the local diner an espresso machine so she wouldn't have to drink their regular coffee. Yeah, I'm not going to write off the place quite yet either. I also grew up in a small town in Western Mass so I'm pretty familiar with the attitudes expressed by the people in the article. It's very much a "you mind your own business and I'll mind my own business" kind of culture. That's pretty much what I thought but I wasn't going to say it because I'm an Eastern Mass. person and I have only been to Shelburne Falls once on my way to visit some pot-smoking bisexual hippies in Northampton. Maybe the Massachusetts Bay Colony should go back to Scarlet Lettering people. Somebody make Cosby an ugly sweater with a big "R" on it for rapist. Then we can shame him without being confrontational about it.

I live by the Cape and this is the first I've heard of Shelburne Falls.

There are lots of small towns and villages in the more rural parts of Massachusetts that no one's heard of, and Shelburne Falls is in the most rural county in the state. There's lots of old mills and farms and pretty scenery but not much else.
And it's been my experience that many folks from Eastern Mass know very little, if anything, about Western Mass. I live in Boston now and I've made it my life goal to educate as many people as possible about where I'm from.

Damon Wayans had a few things to say about the whole situation. I think he should have just kept his mouth shut. Wayans on the radio
