I think she did deserve the Oscar for The Aviator. With a character like Hepburn, there is SO much temptation to make the performance a really bad impersonation (ie Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles) I think that Cate resisted that temptation and found the perfect balance of re-creating Hepburn's speech and mannerisms enough that the audience would recognize them, but not so much that we were distracted by them.

I wasn't emotionally connected to her portrayal, but she definitely deserved something since she got shut out from winning for Elizabeth. She totally deserved that oscar that year.

I think because she's private, but when she talks and gives interviews, she's very gracious and friendly, and funny. I liked her comment about the elf ears-very down to earth and fun.
Also, if that was a dig at Fish, keep in mind that Gwhiney isn't truly a person who values her privacy. She's a famewhore who desparately wants to be seen as the opposite, and not caring, even though it's so freaking obvious that she does care. And after telling you how much she values her privacy, she's off telling you about having conceived her child (was it Apple or the latest seed?) backstage at a Coldplay concert.
That and I've NEVER heard of Cate putting people down, or giving backhanded compliments, or complaining about being tricked into something, or that people copy her.

I feel the complete opposite. Jamie Foxx impersonated Ray Charles mannerisms perfectly. But he also did enough to give me a glimpse into the man's soul. I didn't feel like I was watching Eddie Murphy doing an SNL skit of a blind guy. Foxx made me give a damn about the character, which tells me he did his job and went way beyond impersonation. With Blanchett, I got nothing. Nada.Zip. Her performance as Hepburn was utterly souless, imho. It felt like Blanchett had just gone out and rented Adam's Rib and Bringing Up Baby, and just decided to faithfully render Hepburn's screen persona. I don't think she made any effort to portray the inner Hepburn. It was all surface level stuff. Her performance also verged on a ridiculous caricature, especially in that godawful Golfing scene with Howard Hughes, with Blanchett mugging gormlessly for the camera. She made Renee Zellweger in Cold Mountain look positively restrained.

I agree with you Wooby. I love, love, love Cate Blanchett, but her performance as Katherine Hepburn wasn't her finest moment. I give that it was a tough role to do, but I think it wasn't subtle or restrained.

I hated The Aviator, but I loved Cate Blanchett's performance. I wasn't sad at all when she won the Oscar because the movie seemed much duller when she wasn't on it.

I think I'm the only person who didn't like that dress. I thought the coloring was too harsh and her make-up was harsh as well. I also disliked the embroidery on the back, it looked like some weird tatoo. :let the floggin begin: I wasn't a great fan of the dress, and the red lipstick looks harsh on her. I really hated last year's yellow one- she looked totally washed out and the red lipstick looked like she was bleeding. The Aviator felt like she was trying to do Hepburn at 90, rather than Hepburn at 35. It just felt over the top. Elizabeth was really good, though.

I saw her in Hedda Gabler at the Brooklyn Academy of Music the day before the Oscars. She was brilliant I've seen other productions of Hedda Gabler, but she brought something unusual to the part. Better yet, Hugo Weaving (Elrond and Agent Smith) played Judge Brack. Here's some of what the New York Times said about her performance:

I loved that dress too! It was really perfect for the time -when Princess Gwyneth showed up looking like a giant (ill-fitted) pink lolly Cate just oozed confident sexiness in her Gaultier. I heard that they made her walk the red carpet twice that night because the first time she walked it everyone missed how fabulous the back of her dress was and didn't bother to ask those "who made your gown" questions! She lives in one of the nicest suburbs in Sydney too (no surprise there, I guess), Hunters Hill. But unlike where most of Sydney's celebrities live - in the fabulous Eastern suburbs - Hunters Hill is an understated, classy and very private enclave. It's not the kind of place where you go to a cafe to be photographed. I think she really is committed to having a proper balance between her private and public lives. And rather than whining all day long about how the paparazzi tortures her, she just does the most sensible thing she can - gives few interviews, lives in a quiet suburb, and gets on with her life. Cool lady.

Yeah, I don't think I've EVER heard a single tabloid flap about her, even ones that were harassment. Ever.
