An interesting wrinkle...the Wall Street Journal reports that the NFL wants the halftime act to pay to play, or, more delicately phrased, "be willing to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or if they would make some other type of financial contribution". You know, because the NFL is so hard-up for money. The WSJ is reporting the final three choices are Coldplay, Rihanna and Katy Perry, who have all reportedly had a "chilly" response to this idea. Not sure if the Carrie reports were mere speculation, or if she's the back up plan if the league doesn't relent about making the headliner pay for the honor.

Re: Pay to play - The NFL wants to hire a musical act, only to expect the act to provide a kickback from whatever the NFL is paying as the musician's fee? I'm not surprised Rihanna and Katy Perry reportedly didn't go along with it. They don't need the gig that badly. It'd be different if the terms were couched like so: the musician's fee would be donated to a charity of the NFL's choice (e.g. the United Way, not the NFL!) On the other hand, maybe the NFL should have approached Robin Thicke. He may be so desperate to create a buzz, he might have agreed to such a cockamamie agreement.

The article to which GoldenFleece linked did mention that Carrie currently featured doing the Monday Night Football theme song, so she already has ties to the NFL. She's definitely family friendly and she won't do anything risque on national TV. That is for sure. She has almost zero stage presence. It's going to be one dull show if she gets it. And I'd bet that a large portion of the audience would only know 1 of her songs - Before He Cheats. That's really her only crossover hit. The rest are really only played on country radio which a large portion of the country avoids like the plague. Let's just hope she doesn't sing Jesus, Take the Wheel, which is the stupidest song ever recorded. I can't see Rihanna or Katy Perry doing the show as they are never family friendly in concert. Coldplay just seems like a lame choice. But, I can't really think of anyone current who could top the Beyonce show.

I can't stand her, but thought this was an incredibly cute announcement.

Well, someone's freshened up (and wasn't there a blind about that in that thread, too?)
