I think Martin and his wife are close with Charlie's oldest child; I think she accompanied Martin to some event some years ago. Denise might have been the more energetic choice for the twins, and she was already in the midst of raising children.

I always thought it was odd that Denise took in the twins when Charlie and Brooke were busy being addicts. Nothing against Denise (I think she's AWESOME for all she's done and how she's behaved in the midst of this mess) but I was surprised that Charlie's parents didn't volunteer to have the kids. Yes, they're old but they're old with money and staff. That led me to wonder where they sit in all this. Absent parents, absent grandparents? Maybe it felt like they would be enabling?

I bet Denise let's Martin and his wife visit with her kids, so when she had the twins they probably got to see them if that's what everybody wanted.

Denise might have been the more energetic choice for the twins, and she was already in the midst of raising children. I remember that, he brought her to the Emmys back when the West Wing was winning everything. It was so sweet how proud of her he was. I thought I read somewhere once that he and his wife basically raised her. The twins have serious behavioral issues so I can understand why Martin and his wife might've felt ill equipped to have them at their age, plus I think half the point of Denise having them was so they'd have some kind of a relationship with their half-siblings.

I'd be willing to bet that Martin is helping Denise financially with the kids, and that Denise makes sure the kids have contact with them. They seem like they're all focused on handling the situation in a mature, caring, private manner.

I think she and Martin are actually pretty close/friendly. I don't know that she needs money, as her father is also loaded, but Denise has spoken well of Martin and vice versa.
I remember way back when (before kid sets 2 and 3) Martin Sheen went through a period (in the '80s? '90s?) when Charlie was on deep into drugs and in crisis, and Martin was breaking down and openly trying to reach out and talk to Charlie through he press. Since that time Martin may have adjusted to Charlie's antics, and is less emotional about it when he comes up in interviews.
ETA: Also, wasn't Martin Sheen an alcoholic? It's sad Charlie can't see him as a recovery template. I think Martin has been well for decades (which might also explain why he was so emotional when his son started to have issues), and seems to have mended things with the family, and has often stepped up and gotten his shit together since he began recover in the '70s.

What about Brooke's family? How did Denise, who technically isn't related to the twins, end up with them? (Not saying it was a bad idea at all; it was cool. Just a bit unusual.)

Brook's parents have spent large periods of time parenting them, too.
I think Brooke actually preferred Denise at one point in time. So she might have lobbied for her to get them over her parents at one point.
Anyway, I'm not sure what their deal is, but I know there was major concern awhile back when Brooke was pushing for her brother to get custody. It was pretty obvious that she was looking to spend Charlie's child support checks on drugs after her parents had cut her off. Brooke eventually lashed out at Denise, too, but again that was very sadly seen mostly as resentment over access to money. She's deeply dependent on drugs. It's really sad.

Yeah, IIRC, Martin was in the throes of his addiction when he was filming Apocalypse Now and Charlie was along for that very long shoot. Martin had a heart attack during filming which was part of the reason filming took so long. I'm kind of fuzzy on the details, but I *think* Martin cleaned up his act a few years after AN.
