I don't think she's a terrible actress either. Though just from the trailer... ugh. She just looked so miscast, it was too distracting for me to suspend my disbelief.
Weren't Selma Blair and Rose Byrne among the possible candidates at one point in time? I'd have an easier time seeing either of them in the role than KB. But I suppose that's before they decided to skew younger for the role.

I don't know who should have played Lois Lane. I mean, Kate isn't who I think of immediately, but I don't really think of anyone (I must admit that I am not much of a Superman fan - I like the Reeve films but am not invested in the new installment at all). Who else was in the running? I don't know if she was approached but Rachel McAdams as Lois could have been a decent choice. Wasn't there talk that she was about ten years too old to play a Mean Girl? She's closer to the right age but would feel "young" enough for the producers. She's a charming brunette, I think she might be able to play a determined reporter, and she's a rising star but not yet so big that she'd overshadow Superman.

The story I remember hearing is that there were several actresses considered for the part, but they all turned it down either because they had other committments or because they didn't want to be tied down to any possible sequels. Then Kevin Spacey comes along and insists Skeletor be cast-though I can't imagine why after the mess she made of her role in his movie.
The long and the short of it is that someone else got her a role that no one really wanted. Whether or not she's able to make lemonade out of that lemon is anyone's guess, but given her skill and drive, I don't see it happening.

Yeah, she was. At least that's what her publicist would want us to believe. WIth her, I wouldn't put anything past her. Including trying to steal some publicity from TomKat. I managed to find this May '05 column, possibly the first to mention Tom's list. Kate might have been a more PR-friendly choice. I've snarked on what she wears and her plain looks, but somehow I can't see her becoming the slobby mess Katie is these days.

Well, probably when she heard that a baby would be part of the deal, she ran screaming because that would mean she'd have to get fat. Kate B can certainly pull off the slobby mess look. In most of her setup candid paparazzi shots she pretty much looks that way.

Heh, I'd say that movie was snakebit from start to finish.
*snerk* I think she'd enjoy the life of a shiftless sloth, though.
I still say she was in the running but Clambo rejected her because she was working on Superman at the time and wouldn't be available for promotional and turkey basting/pillowing duties. Funny, innit? The girl spends 18 months doing absolutely freaking nothing, and when she finally gets a job, it causes her to lose out on the role of a lifetime where she would be paid millions and become superfamous for, well, doing absolutely freaking nothing. She sure dodged a bullet, though.
Too bad those other people didn't get the role instead of her, then. The movies might have been a little more watchable.

The whole superman situation just seems strange. I mean, what up-and-coming actress wouldn't want a key role in a film like Superman (especially with Bryan Singer attached)? I also remember quite a few actors turning down the role of Superman (Hartnett, Gyllenhaal???). It just seems strange with the success of films like X-Men (that hasn't really typecast anyone in the films as far as I can tell), Spiderman (ditto) and the new Batman (remains to be seen). It doesn't seem like being the star of a successful comic book adaptation would limit you if your prospects were already limited. I mean, I wouldn't expect people like ScarJo or Natalie Portman (or Rachel McAdams at this point) to jump at the chance, but why were other actresses (and actors!) reportedly so skittish? I am genuinely curious. Perhaps the script was really bad or something and people were hesitant to commit to something that didn't have a solid foundation.

The script was getting changed daily (which isn't so different from any other movie in pre-production), they had a hard time finding Superman, and it kept changing directors. I can see factors like that scaring you away from a project. Who wants to shoot for seven hard months in Australia, to know that it might be a huge, expensive flop? That said, I don't understand hating Kate Bosworth. I think she is pretty, albeit way too skinny, and the only things I've seen her in are Blue Crush and Wonderland, both of which she was not great, but fine. I know about the fangirl Orli hate and whatnot, but I don't see thinking she's lazy and sat around for months on end doing nothing. Maybe she was doing nothing because she wasn't getting cast in anything. Are there tons of stories about her not taking parts because she would rather be Orlando's shadow and just walk her dog looking skinny? Not trying at all to start any kind of argument, just wanting healthy snarking ETA: I don't feel her as Lois Lane. But I also didn't feel Willem DaFoe, who studied with Grey Spaulding's group, to do a good job in Spiderman, and he was perfect, so what do I know. Her hair looks stringy, I'll give you that.

Note to all: please don't use this as an opportunity to start another "jealousy" flamefest. Quite frankly, that's very insulting, because I would have to be at absolute rock bottom to think that this girl has something I desperately wanted.
Lot's of people don't. Hence the claim that people who don't like her are "jus' jellus." Not referring to your comment, of course, just the atmosphere in general.
Actually, most of the people who snark on her are no longer fans of his, myself included. It's the fangirls who worship the ground she walks on like she was the Virgin Mary herself because they think it will impress "Orli" and he'll induct them into his Hall of Acceptable Fans.
Well, she did do some things. She followed Orlando everywhere and shopped a lot.
If you believe her biggest apologist on IMDb-who also claims to be a friend of her family-that's exactly it. She turned down all those roles she was offered (without even having to audition, y'all!) so she could spend more time with her twu wuv, and because the roles weren't "good enough." And her spending every waking moment shadowing Orlando on his film sets didn't give her much time for auditioning and whatnot, so yeah, I consider that lazy.
The snark she gets is no less healthy than what gets lobbed at Britney Spears on a daily basis.
