I remember a comment RDJ made when Susan was pregnant, that he sort of hoped for a daughter because he didn't want Indio to feel like he had to compete with another son. I thought that showed some awareness. Certainly I wouldn't contest that RDJ's troubled years had their impact on Indio, but I'm not sure it's fair to say he just totally moved on.

I didn't mean to imply to RDJ completely checked out of his son's life but for much of Indio's childhood, his dad could definitely be described as unreliable due to substance abuse. Not having a father with a steady, positive influence in his early life could very well have caused some emotional pain that narcotics feed off of all too well. I don't doubt that RDJ loves his son and has made an honest effort in being a good dad but his life his very different now than the one he was leading when Indio was an impressionable child. A new wife, new baby, and a revitalized career took up a lot of his time and could have left a teenager feeling left behind.

I heard that RDJ remained involved in Indio's life. From the article linked upthread: I was going to say. It was my understanding that RDJr has been there for his son over the years, even while dealing with his own problems. I don't think he's ever ignored his son. Not intentionally anyway.

Eh, I don't know. I mean, people are having children a lot later nowadays. At least he's not in his 60s just starting a family (like Steve Martin - whom I adore regardless!).
Sometimes things just happen a little later then what we normally think they should.
I'm just insanely happen for RDJ and his wife. He's done so much to better himself personally and professionally. This is a real blessing for them both.

RDJ walks out on interview in the UK after the reporter (and I use that term loosely) got way too personal about his troubled history. He's been extremely candid about his problems enough times already and has left the past in the past, where it belongs. He was there promoting a movie, so why get into personal history unless all you want is to elicit a juicy soundbite for your own self-serving interest? Pretty sick. Robert handled that with class and dignity, which I think is more than what the interviewer deserved. BTW, this is the same journo who pissed off Tarantino a couple of years ago over Django Unchained, so he has a history as a compete dick. I think RDJ responded perfectly.

I think RDJ handled it perfectly, too. He doesn't have a history of being a prickly interview at all and yes, he's been very candid in the past about his drug use. I think he's always struck the perfect balance in his interviews between being open about his personal life and also moving forward and not continuing to harp on the past.
If anything, I think he was being very professional. He knew he was there to promote a movie and the interviewer wasn't really having it and RDJ wanted to do the job he came there to do. Promote the movie. When it was obvious that wasn't going to happen, he left. I don't blame him for checking out. And he really wasn't even a jerk about it, either. I could understand if he huffed off and said something really rude, but he didn't.

Murthy deserved to have his butt shut down again. Really, there is no purpose to asking about topics that RDJ has already covered exhaustively in much longer and better interviews, other than a crass grab at publicity.

I don't think this was the time or place to bring it up. It did come aross like the reporter was looking for a soundbite.
