She has really been having a hard time in the past few years finding work (and in her love life). It is unfortunate since she seems to be a truly nice person, unlike many other celebrities who have been at it as long as she has and have been hardened by the industry.

Maybe she's secretly getting it on with Simon after the termination of his engagement and stepped away to avoid any weirdness behind the scenes.[/ wild speculation] ETA: Re: her real love life - I hadn't realized that Paula had been dating anyone. She and her last bf split in November. ETA2: From TMZ: Simon Cowell I'm Not Finished With Paula Abdul

I think I saw about 1 1/2 episodes of her reality show when it aired on Bravo, and she is decidedly NOT a nice person. The way she treated her assistants was despicable. She whined and complained constantly, and was always bursting into tears and accusing the people around her of abusing her when they were doing nothing but pampering her and kissing her ass. And she was completely drugged up the whole time and pretending the reason she kept nodding off was because she was tired from being overworked. Horrible, horrible person.

She was on one of the NBC Morning Shows and she looks fantastic. So fresh and glowy. Doesn't look like she's aged a bit, yet with no discernible work done. She's promoting her new video 'Check Yourself' to promote breast cancer awareness. Her sister, a survivor is featured in the vid - she's the one in the white blouse, short brown hair. I don't love the video but the message is a good one. Check Yourself

Paula's got that great olive skin, so she's aging beautifully. And in spite of her deep well of crazy, she's basically a good human being. I am not surprised that her insides match the outside.

My mom met her in a restaurant and said she was super, super nice. She gave my mom a hug, and talked to her for a few minutes. My aunt was in the restroom when they were talking so she didn't get to meet her, and my mom said something about that. Paula sat down before my aunt came back. When Paula was leaving the restaurant an hour later she came back to find my mom, and introduced herself to my aunt since she wasn't able to meet her before. My mom was a total stranger to her, it's not like they were old acquaintances or anything.
Then I tweeted Paula to thank her for being so cool and she tweeted me back twice. Super nice.

Maybe she was nice to your mom and aunt because they were treating her like the gift that she is. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

One of the local radio stations where I live plays the worst of the 80s and 90s all the time. It's like they picked 250 shitty songs from that era, and has them on permanent shuffle. Paula is heavily featured. Her voice is like nails on a blackboard to me. I can never understand how she got a record contract.

At least her voice wasn't protooled to death. (While we're at it, how does her replacement on American Idol, Jennifer Lopez, keep getting record deals?) I will always love " Rush Rush" (with or without the video). ETA: FotoStoreSheila - Straight Up complete with the cameo from Arensio!

Replace Paula with Jennifer Lopez, and I've got the exact same question! I think Paula was just in the right place at the right time. Speaking as someone who owned albums by Paula Abdul and Milli Vanilli, I don't know that having a good voice was important in 1988. Visuals were really important, and Paula was a bomb ass choreographer, with some great looking videos. I still geek out over the first 20 seconds of the Straight Up video.
