I have heard really good things about Robin, like that he has spent time at hospitals and that he was always really nice to sick children and would sit down on the floor to play with them and not be condesending. That's pretty cool.
Got to admit I don't think he's particularly funny, though. I agree the last good comedy he made was "Mrs. Doubtfire" and that came out in 1993.

Some of his stuff I liked, but most of it is way too annoying. However, a friend of mine met RW through one of the Make-a-Wish organizations, and yes, he was delightful, personable, and spent a lot of time with her friend's son (who has cancer and wants to be a comedian), encouraging him and making everyone laugh.

Stories like the ones above are the reason why I just can't hate this guy. I have had no desire to see any of his movies in years, and when he appears on talk shows and such I want to reach through my tv and strangle him, but everyone I know who has had an encounter with him has only had good things to say so I gotta believe that there is a truly nice person under the schtick.
Didn't he also pay a good chunk of Christopher Reeve's medical bills or something like that? I know they were friends from college, and I seem to remember reading about him doing something rather remarkable and generous for CR ( I could be remembering wrong, though).
I'm glad he decided to try to nip his drinking problem in the bud before it really started to cause problems. I hope he comes through okay.

At times he can be great... i.e. Dead Poets Society (one of my all time favorite movies). Other times, not so much. I like him... he's just a maniac and isn't afraid to express that side of him. For all the, over the top comedians to make it Hollywood, he bugs me the least. Now, Jim Carrey is a different story.
With all that said, a friend of mine is a comedian (he appeared briefly on the first season of "Last Comic Standing") and evidently RW is well known for pilfering other comedians material and pawning it off as his own. The young up-and-coming comedians are too afraid to do anything about it.
My friend told me that when they see Robin Williams in the audience, it's a bit of a bummer because they wonder who's jokes he's going to steal next.

He's totally hot, with his cheeky British ass.
Ohhh... Robin Williams.
Uh... he has really hairy arms. That's about all I have.

I call bullshit on alcoholism--Oh No They Didn't says he's doing coke again. But alcoholism is more palatable to mainstream America. The worst celebrities will ever admit to being in rehab for is painkillers.
And I absolutely cannot stand him. He may say one funny thing for every hundred things he says in his hyper-manic riffs, but he's way too obnoxious for me to listen for it.

I am one of the 4 people who saw RV and I liked it. I even laughed. Saw it on a plane this weekend and thought it was wholesome and that he did a good job. My husband gave it a thumbs up too. O.K....we are up to 7 6 people. ;D

At least he's seeking help before an outburst. Can't hate him for that. Maybe CrazyMel's public downfall is encouraging other slebs to seek help before they end up in mug shots looking batshit?

The young up-and-coming comedians are too afraid to do anything about it. My friend told me that when they see Robin Williams in the audience, it's a bit of a bummer because they wonder who's jokes he's going to steal next. There was a time where you could call Robin Williams' management and just say "Robin stole my joke" and they would just take your name and address and send you a check for $150. You didn't have to verify it or anything, and they just didn't have the time to care so they just cut checks right and left. He doesn't even deny he's a monstrous joke thief. I know comics who will not go on if he's in the audience, and the club management is understanding about it cause his thievery is so well known. He's probably a huge head case, but I forgive a lot because of how he appeared to come thru big time for Christopher Reeve (RIP).
