If disgusting Dustin Diamond can have a thread, why for art there no Weird Al thread?
I love Weird Al. I remember in high school, Al was just a college kid that used to send tapes to Dr. Demento to play, and my friends would play stuff we recorded off the radio and bust a gut laughing... Who knew almost 3 decades later, he would still be going strong? Who knew you could make money from parody?
Who knew I would never mature past that point in high school?
I just picked up Straight Outta Lynwood, and I feel oddly substantiated by "White and Nerdy". Long have I listened to rappers boast about the guilded trappings of their lifestyle, now Al stands up and boldly proclaims to the world that there is an alternative - Nerdy and Proud. And all the computer gizmos, softwares, toys and icons that frame our lifestyle... Represent!

I'm listening to Straight Outta Lynwood as we speak. I think Virus Alert is my favorite song.
I lurve Weird Al. I was a kid when Off the Deep End came out and my brother and I just about wore that cassette out. Even though I had no idea who Nirvana was I loved the Smells Like Nirvana video, although I didn't truly appreciate how brilliant it was until I finally saw the Smells Like Teen Spirit video.
And as a proud nerd I love that he's such an unrepentant geek.

That story last year about how his parents died was such randomly awful news. I really feel bad for him, so I'm glad to see he's still chugging along.
On a badly-segued-into lighter note, I am physically incapable of hearing the song "Bad" without mouthing along the words to "Fat." When I sit around the house, I really sit around the house...

Oh, hell to the YEAH for Weird Al! I think he's just adorable, although I wish he still had his glasses. My faves are "Amish Paradise," "Cavity Search," "Germs" and all the polka medleys. Beyond hilarious! He has a great band, too, full of terrific musicians. And does Al have the most crazy-limber body ever?! Dang. I heard that his parents both died in a house fire: please tell me that isn't true! Also heard he got married to one of the "cheerleaders" on "Smells Like Teen Spirit," which I hope IS true. He deserves all the happiness he can stand.

Weird Al saved my ass countless times in high school theater class when we had to do musical interpratations of songs. I have loved his music since a friend introduced me to the Jurassic Park song in 6th grade. I agree there are some songs he has covered that I cannot remember the real lyrics to, which is good when it was orignally a FUBAR song.

This man is totally underrated as a musician. Yeah, he writes goofy songs, but he's also a talented multi-instrumentalist with perfect pitch, and he's never written a forced rhyme in his life. He also has a reputation for being the consummate professional, great to work with -- AND he and his wife gave their daughter a totally sane name.
Am I alone in liking the stand-alone songs better than the parodies?

IIRC, they both died of carbon monoxide poisoning in their home. Don't ask me how, I haven't really read about it since it happened.

I heard that it was a fire, but it very well may have been carbon monoxide. I just felt bad - his parents seemed so sweet on his Behind the Music episode.
Yeah, I dig Weird Al. As pointed out above, he really is a talented musician and songwriter, and he seems like such a nice guy. I've never heard anything bad about him. Also, the dude is just not aging. I swear he looks almost exactly the same as he did 20 years ago.
I think I prefer his "original" songs too. Those and the polkas - how can you not love a polka?

IAlso, the dude is just not aging. I swear he looks almost exactly the same as he did 20 years ago. I think this may be because he's about the only celebrity alive who didn't spend his twenties snorkeling in a bottle of tequila, breathing through a coke straw. He's always been straightedge -- partying ages you, and not partying keeps you looking pretty sprightly. Exhibit B is Prince, who also looks exactly the same as he always has, and hasn't allowed anyone to so much as light a cigarette around him since 1983.

Aw, I love Weird Al. He's really a great songwriter who, if he hadn't found his own (decidely wacky) niche, could be writing well-crafted, chart-topping pop songs for all sorts of people. Of course, I like what he does on his own much better. Someone on this board mentioned the irony that a 'novelty act' like Weird Al is still releasing quality, well-selling albums and the big artists of the 80's like Modonna and Michael Jackson have slid into irrelevance and insanity, respectively.
Didn't he graduate college at some ridiculously early age?
