I remember being shocked when I was in London in the late 80s and in the underground there were posters to raise awareness for cerebral palsy, but the text used the word "Spastic". To describe the people with cerebral paslsy. Something like, "Spastics need your help to live normal lives". I don't know if they would still use that word today. But I was shocked, I tell you, shocked. In the book Karen, by Marie Killilea, which was published in the 50s and was about a little girl who had CP, the word "spastic" is used universally to describe the type of CP that Karen had. Turns out, according to cerebralpalsy.org, the term has not been completely discarded.

Wow. Had NO idea. I'm an 80s kid, too. Grew up in Alaska and never knew "spaz" meant something other than "klutzy" or "goofy." (I, too, always thought of "spastic colon." Oh, man.)
I'm glad Al's making such a comeback, though.
