I was speaking of public opinion. I apologize if that wasn't clear. Ok. Got it now. But I also forgot to mention that Pharell also testified that Robin didnt have any part in writing the song either. When the Gayes' lawyers tried to get Pharell to admit that the music was what made the song such a hit, Pharell denied that and said tha it was because Robin was white and white musicians don't get a chance to do traditionally black music. It is just completely obvious what they are doing. Yeah, okay, Pharrell. Forty years ago, one could have bought that excuse. Now? Robin's been doing the blue-eyed soul thing for about his entire career. He should be ahead of PAB in the game if that were the case.

I swear when news broke of him throwing Pharrell under the bus I instantly thought, Punk Ass Bitch 2: Electric Boogaloo.

I hadn't really had a chance to listen to "Got to Give it Up" on its own since this scandal broke. Every time it was with Blurred Lines as a comparison and with people talking over it. I only had a vague sense when 'Blurred Lines' was making the rounds that it sounded like something I'd heard before and that it was an old song.
But today as I was driving to work, 'Got to Give it Up' came on the radio and no one was talking over it so I was able to give it a good listen. And honestly, the tempo is significantly different, there's more going on vocal and instrument wise in 'Blurred Lines'... but otherwise it's the same damn tune (Perfectly timed 'WOOOOO!'S and all)
I think these guys could have saved themselves a lot of trouble if they'd just given some props to Marvin Gaye in the liner notes- maybe even shouted out his name in the song- and sent a check to his estate early on. I think it's a little too close to count as 'inspired by' or 'in homage to'.
Or at least I guess I should say Pharrell could have saved himself a lot of trouble... as Robin was apparently gargling Vicodin pills and had to be brought into the studio in a wheelbarrow and propped up Weekend at Bernie's style during the entire making of this tune. [insert eyeroll smiley]

I would normally be like "Schadenfreude, ha ha!" but he had his kid with him. Poor Julian.

Is this the closest we have to a Pharrell thread? I was just watching the 1938 Marx Brothers movie, At the Circus, and there is a piece called Swingali with Harpo and a cast of (a lot) of black kids and adult singers and dancers. There is a guy who looks a LOT like Pharrell wearing a way oversized Mountie hat. It just tickles me the Pharrell got the idea for that hat while watching an old Marx Bros movie.

Are you sure the guy isn't, in fact, Pharrell. The dude's a vampire. Google his yearbook photo!

I sat down and listened to Blurred Lines and Got To Give It Up, over & over, to try and see the similarities... aside from the backbeat, I still don't hear it.

Well, he officially got served. Paula filed divorce papers this week. ETA: I just noticed that Robin's middle name is that of his father, Alan. Let me get this straight, his initials are "RAT"? That should of been your first clue, Paula.

What kind of parent doesn't think about these things when naming their child? Then again, knowing what a smartass Alan Thicke is, he probably did it on purpose.
