Her comments to Jessica were so condescending. If someone who didn't know me called me "baby" that many times I would slap them in the face. That's such an old, rich, white lady thing to say. Tell someone who's been waiting at the airport all weekend without food or water to "find their democracy inside." A commenter on Celebitchy pointed out that Salma's husband's company was one of the first to visit Trump Tower after the election. I have a feeling there are a lot of celebs who denounce Trump in public but privately... Not saying she is. Just a gut feeling.

My first and only interaction with Salma was at Showest many years ago. At one point, she had to use the bathroom, and she bitched to her publicist "Why am I walking amongst all these people?" (we're talking about industry types, not hysterical fans).....And I thought, "because you are one?" I haven't really liked her since.
The dress is a bit much.....

I'm trying to understand what Salma and Shirley were saying. I like and respect Jessica Williams, and think she is brilliant--so I may biased. But the one thing I am liking about this administration is that, at least for me, it's forcing out some conversations we've been too polite to have. Jessica Williams deserves to have her voice heard--and by just dismissing her (and what the fuck with the "find the democracy inside" shit from Shirley MacClaine?) Salma failed here.

Shirley had to be on the panel to discuss the oppression of women she witnessed in her three previous lives. Hahahahahahahaha! As other people on another message board pointed out when Salma said this: Salma Hayek was a trailbalzer for Latinas in Hollywood? She was the first one? Someone tell Rita Hayworth*, Raquel Welch, and Rita Moreno that! *I know she's deceased, but the essence of my point stands.

Also, Maria Conchita Alonso, Rosie Perez, Elizabeth Pena, Sonia Braga...I'm sure there's more (who have older careers than Salma's).

And even if what Salma was saying was true, so what? It's not a competition to see who is the most oppressed. She could have faced racism when she was trying to break in 25 years ago and Jessica Williams could be facing it now. Those aren't contradictory statements. Not to mention that what works for some people won't work for others. Even if Salma believes she got ahead by never taking no for an answer and just believing in herself or whatever, that doesn't work for everyone.
Salma posted some bs statement on her Instagram about how she was shocked by the article. She thought the luncheon was a great success and was only disappointed that it ended and she could not continue to engage. Translation she wanted to argue and harangue Jessica some more. Oh and she was especially dismayed that a woman wrote that article because apparently criticizing other women is anti-feminist.

Show some respect, Salma. Rita Moreno is an EGOT recipient for goodness sake. If anyone was a pioneer for the Latina actresses, it would be Rita. Also, classy people don't refer to themselves as trailblazers.

The end of Salma's instagram post was a little scary, like she was vowing revenge.
I've tried to play devil's advocate and see how Salma might not have been completely wrong here, but I can't. Basically she was saying in a very dumb way that the onus is on the victim of oppression not to be a victim and to take charge of their own destiny and mind...or something like that.
And then she said she was the mostest oppressed person ever and she was able to pull herself up by her bootstraps and triumph, therefore somebody less oppressed like Jessica should be able to as well, which is 25 different types of wrong.
It was very typically the view of a privileged person who has no idea how privileged she is and who goes through life congratulating herself on how hard she has worked to overcome obstacles that other people can't imagine. She was probably always like that, and living in a Hermes palace in France with her billionaire husband probably has not helped.
And I can't get Molly Shannon out of my head, kicking her leg up and yelling, "I'm 50!"

Oh and she was especially dismayed that a woman wrote that article because apparently criticizing other women is anti-feminist. That's another WTF moment of her response. Like, "Really?" (Now, if this were Fox News or some other notorious right-leaning publication, we can have that conversation, but...) And then she said she was the mostest oppressed person ever and she was able to pull herself up by her bootstraps and triumph, therefore somebody less oppressed like Jessica should be able to as well, which is 25 different types of wrong. The "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" notion! Thank you for putting your finger on what bugged the hell out of me regarding her comments. (They bugged me on a visceral, personal level.) Jessica Williams even reportedly said: ...yet Salma still charged on with being clueless and willfully ignorant.
