That's mean! [/hugs her Penélope closer] But true, she has quite the accent. I think, eventually, many actors simply stop trying. Take Salma Hayek. She was quite distracting on Ugly Betty, because she puts the emphasis on the wrong word in every single sentence. Has quite the Walken effect, it does.
But back to Penélope, she has the best hair in the business. I thought she was lovely in Vanilla Sky, which, shockingly, I vastly preferred to Abre los ojos due to the crapness of Eduardo Noriega, who is even more annoying than T.Cruise.

Some people simply don't have an ear for accents and exposure makes no difference. My Italian aunt is wonderfully well educated and well-read in English, has an English vocabulary that is much better than most native speakers, and never makes a gramatical mistake, but her accent is ever-present (causing my uncle, her husband to periodically break out in song "Dis, dat, do da, do da."

Probably right, batmom. My grandmother is exactly the same (if you swap Italian for Ukrainian.)

awww, I like her accent. As well as Salma's. It's charming.
But I still think Penelope has sort of duck-like lips. <runs away in shame for cattily slamming beautiful woman>

I was impressed by her performance in Volver. But I have a feeling that has more to do with Almodovar's direction than her talent. She's gorgeous, though.

MrsCatHead, I totally agree. She has duck lips that her nose looks ready to smash into.
As for her acting, I have no opinion because I've never seen her in anything. I'm intrigued by Volver, though.

I think she's gorgeous, and I would love to have that hair. She reminds me a bit of my mother when she was young too, so maybe that explains the affection that I have for her. As for her acting, well I have only seen one of her Spanish films (Jamon Jamon with Javier Bardem), and I didn't care for it. She was okay in it - as she is in every English-language movie. I would like to see Volver though - her performance is supposed to be wonderful. She reminds me of Sophia Loren in a way - beautiful Mediterranean actress who does a decent/good job in English-language films, but is way better in her own language. Anyway, she seems like a nice person, so more power to her.

They were holding hands? I don't hold hands with my male friends unless they are injured and navigating steps, and it would be even weirder if I held hands with a friend while their wife and kids were walking with us. Am I alone on this?
