All I know is:
Using racial slurs, specifally in regard to one parent? Bad Badmouthing of the other parent to the child? Bad Fistfights between Father and Stepfather? Bad Constant court battles? Bad
Yeah, I hope Nahla's got a budget line in her trust fund for future therapy.

For me, the crux of the issue is that Halle's relationship with Gabriel has so badly deteriorated that either she can't (or won't) have a civil conversation with him about their daughter's hair, or he's intentionally taking action that will irritate her. The courts should not need to get involved. If they were still together, they'd have a discussion about it and come to an agreement about how they should deal with the hair issue. The same should apply now that they've split. As annoying as I find Gwyneth Paltrow, she and Chris have handled their split in a way that is sensitive to the their children's needs. Halle and Gabriel need to get it together for Nahla's sake. And Olivier should be encouraging them to work on their issues and to find a way to successfully co-parent.

And Olivier should be encouraging them to work on their issues and to find a way to successfully co-parent. The same man who ended up in a fist fight with Gabriel? Hopefully Gabriel doesn't get so fed up that he'll leave a note like this for Nahla.

It would help if Halle isn't so hellbent on getting rid of Gabriel's existence in their daughter's life. Honestly, he could do all she wishes 'for the sake of Nahla' and still be found wanting by her.
Martinez better be taking notes on the sly, because this would be the same scenario if/when they break up.

If Gabriel has made racial slurs, then that's unacceptable. However...this is coming from Halle, who is crazy as hell, so I'm not prepared to accept it as the truth. Anyway, even though I know Halle has said in the past that she considers Nahla to be "black", she's not. She's a quarter black and three quarters white, and her father has fairly light hair. It's not surprising to me that her hair might turn a bit blonde in the middle of the summer in California. I have to disagree with this. It's up to Nahla to decide how she will identify herself. Most people I know with one black or mixed parent, and one white parent call themselves black. My mother, whose father appeared white to all (and even HE identified as black) calls herself black as well. Her attitude is, "everybody wants to be everything else, rather than just black." A lot of us are pushing harder to be seen as "biracial". Choosing white or black comes from the days when we didn't have an "other" category to choose. I can remember being in grade school with the teacher telling me I couldn't put down both races on the standardized test form and feeling like I had to chose between my parents. Southern black people seem to be the most insistent that biracial people are black. It's a complicated issue though, because most black families that have been in the south for a few generations are pretty much guaranteed to have at least one white slave owner in the family tree. (Disclaimer: While this is one of my favorite topics to talk about, I of course do not speak for all biracial people. )

I get why Halle probably thinks it's important for Nahla to identify as black, Halle is seen, and treated, as black by a majority of people, including folks who wield power. And if racial slurs are coming out of Gabriel's mouth, I wouldn't trust him to guide my child with regards to her racial identity either.
I've always thought Gabriel was as big a mess as Halle, nothing I hear about him makes me change my mind.

Has it ever been proven that Gabriel has used racial slurs? As far as I can see, all we have is Halle's accusations. I imagine Gabriel is just tired of all this shit at this point, and wondering when it's going to be Olivier's turn.

Why is Halle testifying that he used a racial slur (and not for the first time) so ferociously discounted? As far as I know, she does not accuse people of being racist willy nilly. Is it really so unbelievable that a white man used a racial slur? We don't know anything about this guy, just because Halle can be an asshole doesn't mean this Gabriel isn't up to some shenanigans with his biracial daughter.

Anything she accuses Gabriel of I discount unless there is overwhelming proof.
One day when she's hauling Olivier Martinez into court once a month I'll probably be applying the same rule of thumb to her accusations against him.

I just googled, and there are stories that go back a few years that Gabriel might be kind of racist, although it's all "sources say Gabriel is borderline racist" and that he used an undetermined slur of some sort. It's possibly true (and not in the theoretical-math way), although another piece of evidence is that he doesn't like when people describe Nahla as black, yet these articles don't say what he prefers. I'm not a parent of a child of any heritage, so I'll just leave that there for people more experienced than me to deal with.
