Wow, I'm so surprised to find so much hate for this movie here. I really liked, and I even thought Jude Law was great in it. I don't like Jude Law the person, but I do admit he's a talented actor, much better than "movie stars" like Tom Cruise.
Anyway, I think the movie didn't really appeal to a lot of people for several reasons. It basically just consisted of talking, and it doesn't seem like any major changes were made from the play. Also, none of the character's were likable, and most movie going audiences always want to like the people they're watching.
As for the performance, Clive Owen was brilliant, followed by both Portman and Law. Julia Roberts, didn't ruin the movie as I'd expected, but she still showed that she can't act.

I think people are entitled to comment on how they feel about specific actors and how that relates to performances in a film. It's pretty much what you've done in the above 2 paragraphs isn't it?
I liked the movie but I thought Portman was the weakest and I think the closing scene was overkill. I normally dislike Roberts intensely in most of her performances and I thought she did ok in this. Clive Owen was brilliant. I would have liked to see him as Dan in the stage production.
None of the characters were really likeable, and I think to make a good film with mostly repugnant characters who never redeem themselves is hard, but in some ways truer to life.
For me there was something oddly satisfying about Larry fucking Dan over a second time, just because he could.

Apart from Clive Owen, who really got his teeth into the role, I was rather impressed with Julia Roberts - possibly mostly because her performance was far better than her usual output. Also, her Anna was vastly superior to that I saw performing on stage (no, not Natasha!).
Jude was quite good - not one of his best, but as good as I expect from him - and Natalie just did her self-pitying crying/shouting routine. I still find that she is rather self-concious.

I hated this movie and I don't mind plays turned into movies. I loved Glengarry Glen Ross and that's pretty much non-stop fast talking the whole time. I also liked Six Degrees of Seperation and I think most of those characters had their unlikeable qualities.
This one just bugged. I don't even hate most of the actors. I like Jude Law. I like Clive Owen, I like Natalie Portman and although I can't stand Julia Roberts in interviews, I usually enjoy her movies. But it all seemed so slow and pretentious.

*****Warning: Possible Spoilers*******
Saw this for the first time 2 nights ago. Liked it. I didn't *love* it, but it was more entertaining than most movies I see.
I am surprised to admit this but I thought Natalie Portman's performance was very good, as was Clive Owen's. I don't think Jude Law has the acting chops for his role and for some reason, possibly her inability to moderate her physical mannerisms and personal body language (i.e. she's always Julia Roberts) when she plays different characters, I just can't take JRoberts seriously as anything other than a movie stah.
I found the final sequence somewhat jarring - liked the music, could tolerate the slow-mo, but the exaggerated faces of the men whipping their heads around and checking her out almost made me want to laugh, and I don't think that scene was going for humour. Also, the 'Alice Ayers' thing was gimmicky, a little.
I didn't find the script unrealistic - I expected to, based on things I've read/heard about the flick but there were a few lines in there I've uttered myself, practically verbatim, in fights with boyfriends.

I was really looking forward to this movie and it ended up being the biggest waste of time. Pretty bad movie considering the cast in this film. Very slow, drab and uninteresting.

Agreed. I don't necessarily have to like characters to enjoy a movie, but I have to care about them, the ideas presented in the movie, or the story to give it a pass. I felt like I was watching a bunch of boring people deal with their non-existent issues. Everything just felt really flat.

I really liked this movie. True, the characters weren't likeable but most of the people I meet in real life aren't very likeable; I found this portrayal to be true-to-life.
I didn't find anyone's performance to be all that bad. My favorite was definitely Clive Owen's.
I love the fact that Natalie's character lied about something that was so significant. Proves that you never really know people, even when you think you do.
For the most part, relationships suck and I was glad to see a movie that finally explored that.

I was really, really hating this movie until the last half hour or so. I'm usually okay with Julia Roberts but I didn't like her in this movie and I'm on Natalie Portman overload (she's been on Sesame Street, for crying out loud. She's everywhere). I really thought it was going nowhere until Larry shows up at Alice's place of employment. From that point on, I thought it was great. I wish the previous hour had been written that well.
