I remember when Angelina Jolie and Rita Wilson wrote op/eds about their breast cancer experiences. I thought at first it was an overshare and famewhorey. Then I thought it could be a good thing: these are women with access to the best health care available and they wanted to provide information to women who don’t have that access. Cameron Diaz doesn’t owe strangers any explanation about her parenthood. Are there women who might benefit from hearing about her experiences? Of course. But it still comes down to her life, her choice. And yes, I would have an opinion if she had an abortion or if she got breast implants or if she got a face tattoo, but I still support her right to do what she wants with her body. And there’s a huge difference between having a 20 year old kid at 68 and having a 20 year old kid at 90. The former is challenging, the latter is ridiculous.

I’m mildly surprised that someone in Hollywood said they would retire and then seems to have actually done that. She’s done some magazine covers here and there but hasn’t done any acting, right? I just watched "The Holiday" the other day and, honestly, she had (has?) some great comedic chops. I wonder if she'll ever attempt a comeback. And...Raddix is still an awful, awful name.

I found a lump in my breast shortly before Angelina's article came out. Reading it helped spur me out of denial/fear and into the doctor's office. It was benign, luckily. I'm really glad she did write it.

Slight O/T because I'm not mentioning Cameron. My best friend died of breast cancer at age 48. It turned out she did have the BRCA1 gene, but she didn't know in time to do a preventative mastectomy. However, her younger sister did know in time that she too had the gene and went on to have a double mastectomy and her ovaries removed at age 45. She is now 53 and so far is cancer free. So I completely applaud Angeline Jolie and Rita Wilson for their op/eds. I was so annoyed when Melissa Etheridge attacked Angelina for doing so.

I believe that medical practices do women as a whole a disservice. Miscarriages, abortion, menopause, fertility, vaginas, hormones, birth control, etc., are all things we are conditioned not to talk about because it's personal and so we don't. I think celebs who go public with their health issues can help us to have those conversations, but they don't owe us. I have no idea how we can get past this culture of medical silence.
Raddix is a horrible name.

People are open about most medical issues - no one hides their heart attack or pneumonia. But certain issues, particularly women's health and infertility, remain taboo to the disservice of us all.

My trashy cousin has a boy called Raddyson so Raddix, for me, is a step up from a very low bar.

I am mildly (like, barely) curious about how it happened for a few reasons in the sense that there’s a bit of a story: a slightly older woman semi retired from celebrity who previously indicated happiness and contentment without kids suddenly announces arrival of a baby. Her life choices are her business, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't stuck on this part. I can't help it.
