I rented this last night and felt the same way as Kafka. Just an utter waste of time. I know that we're supposed to take something from Bill Murray's advice to the boy but damn it was such a slow movie that I didn't give a shit by the end. It just dragged.
The endless driving scenes reminded me of Manos: Hands of Fate.

Hmmm, I was thinking about Netflixing this, but I completely agree with Kafka on this point:
Man, I hate that too. I just want to say, "Look, can you please stop trying to be 'deep' and just say whatever it is you want to say?"
That definitely has be thinking twice about this one.

Kafka I wish I had read your post before I spent two hours of my life watching this movie.
I didn't give a damn about any of the characters except Winston. I don't think Don cared about any of the characters either. I found I wasn't even curious by the middle of the movie who had written the letter.
A waste of celluloid. And a waste of talented actors.
The story sucked. I watched to the end thinking I should just give it time and pay attention to all the details and maybe it would come together in some fashion or another. But no. Not worth it at all.
No. It's not just you. I picked up on that too. But again I was like "Okay, fine. Whatever. How do I care about this? Where is this movie going?"
I refuse to think about this what could have been going on with this plot or with the characters. I have pressed a shift-delete button in my mind on this movie experience and I refuse to store this meandering jumble in my memory.

I have pressed a shift-delete button in my mind on this movie experience and I refuse to store this meadering jumble in my memory. Heh, poor Flipper. You have my complete and utter sympathy. In the months since I've seen it, I've managed to delete the details from my memory. All that's left is a very bad taste in my mouth when hearing the movie's name, and unresolved anger issues at whomever directed that pile of crap. One of the WORST movies I've seen in ages. In fact, we should both probably post that in the Worst Movies thread in order to save some other poor souls from making the same mistake we did.

I so wanted to like this movie too. I love Bill Murray, especially when world weary. I also love Jim J. -- Mystery Train and Night on Earth rock. I liked all the little vignettes with Sharon, Tilda, etc. and, of course, Winston and his family but the ending really sucked. Was that supposed to be his son in the car at the end? What really could have been an interesting movie was very disappointing.

If you read the end credit it mentions "man in the car" as Homer Murray, Bill's son in real life. If you look at the man in the car has a receding hair line and looks exactly like Bill.
I didn't have a problem with the film. I didn't expect a "happily ever after" from a Jim Jarmusch film to begin with.
Jeffrey Wright was the main reason I stayed with the film.
